Svalbard (or Spitsbergen) has the farest north settlements in the world. It's under Norwegian sovereignty. Some 3000 people live and/or work here. The Islands is also densely populated by the polar bear.

Fossils from trees and even dinosaurus, can be found around Svalbard.
Back in the early days Svalbard had a tropical climate with lots of vegetation. It is believed that the islands was pushed north from a postion near Central Europa or even equator.
The cut off shape of the Svalbard mountains witness that the islands was former under the sea level and has raised from the seabed.

Hello Christian,
Impressive, almost intimidating view. Contrast and colors are well-captured. Regards,

excellent vista. distant mountains and low clouds give a feeling of imensity. good focus and colors.

Brrrrrrrrrrrr, I'll shut up abt spring being late in Nova Scotia... By the way is Franz Josef Land not occupied?

In any case, a very foreboding view here! I like that wee bit of colour that rescues this photo. Not often we see one from this area, eh. ;) Tfs, Jay

Hi Christian.
Amazing view on mountains over dark sea.Low and dark clouds make very impressive atmosphere.I like composition and very good exposure.Well done,TFS.
Best greetings Milos.

Hi Christian,
this is perfect to express how things are here in High River today, yesterday was sunny and warm and now it is like your picture, dull and cloudy and cold.I like this photo as it shows a land not unlike northern Canada that is beautiful and yet foreboding at the same time. The sullen grays and the dark shades of those clouds and the snow and ice give a sombre look.I'm wondering, does this area have any plant life in it now ,as you made no mention of it in your note.A good wide angle shot with decent details in it,your photo conveys this place well. Tfs. Bob

Hello Christian!
It is really nice to watch picture from the place where I was about 4 years ago :) Nice seascape with some "dramatic" POV ;>
Best greetings,
Radomir

PS. please feel free to see some of my "postcards" from this region hehe, here, and here :)

Christian

Great shot. i love the detail and the strong clouds that pull you towards the mounatins.

Hi Christian,

Really dynamic landscape shot. I love it.

The graininess of the film/scanning has actually added to this shot. The foreboding clouds are my favourite part of the scene and the light seems to be trying to shine through in the distance. The photo actually takes on the form of a painting with its oil like qualities.
Excellent composition and the wide angle has given us full appreciation of whole scene.

Great stuff.
