[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
This is a rebound on the Common tern which Ivan (Argus) posted today. The Arctic tern (Sterna paradisaea)is very much a look-a-like of the common tern. It has common breeding ground, so distinguish you need to take a closer look. Blood red bill and longer tailfeathers point to the Arctic tern.

As the name sugggests this tern breeds in Arctic regions. I think most of you know this tern travels half the world in the non breeding seasons. It travels from the Northern hemisphere to southern parts of the southern hemisphere.

The name Sterna paradisaea refers to the beleive of the Ancient Greeks in a Huperboreioi [lit. beyond the north]: a paradise of happiness in the high northern regions.

The picture was taken on Spitsbergen. Despite all precautions it is sometimes impossible to stay away from young birds. The adult birds will defend fiercly it's territory against all intruders....in this case it's us :-(

Hello Jacob,
Quite a coincidence!
You would certainly get praise from me for this shot of the Arctic Tern not just because you were kind enough to give me critique fore mine, but because this is really an excellent in-flight action capture. You can almost hear this tern screetching to protect its young!
Nice sharpness, lighting and composition.
TFS,
Ivan

Nice action shot, Jacob!
