[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Strongylocentrotus droebachiensis is commonly known as the green sea urchin because of its characteristic green color. It is commonly found in northern waters all around the world including both the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans to a northerly latitude of 81 degrees and as far south as the Puget Sound (Washington State) and England. The average adult size is around 50 mm (2 in), but it has been recorded at a diameter of 87 mm (3.4 in). The green sea urchin prefers to eat seaweeds but will eat other organisms that float by or even catch small fish. They are eaten by a variety of predators, including sea stars, crabs, large fish, mammals, birds, and humans.

Habitat
Strongylocentrotus droebachiensis is found on rocky substratum in the intertidal and 1,150 meters (3,800 ft) depth. It uses its strong Aristotle's lantern to burrow into rock, and then can widen its home with the spines. Usually, this sea urchin can leave its hole to find food and then return, but sometimes it creates a hole that gets bigger as it gets deeper, so that the opening is too small for S. droebachiensis to get out. S. droebachiensis has the surprising ability to live in waters that have a lower salinity than any other Echinoidea. This allows it to flourish in the south Puget Sound, which otherwise does not contain enough salinity to provide for Echinoidea.

Strongylocentrotus droebachiensis - what a mouthful!! It is a pretty sea egg, so sharp and colourful.

We also have Sea Urchins in NZ and the Maori name is Kina. But our Kina / Sea Eggs (Evechinus chloroticus have) dark grey / black spines - nothing as pretty as your photo.

PS After I wrote this I looked up Kina and this is what I found:
New Zealand has about 70 sea urchin species; most are deep-water dwellers, but 11 are found around coastal reefs.

Kina or the common sea urchin or sea egg (Evechinus chloroticus) is the best-known species – commercially valuable and considered a delicacy by Māori.

A very interesting capture in rich colours and with fine clarity.
I am a little surprised after reading your notes. You mention green colour of the urchin, but it looks red and yellow to me!???Wonder why!

The depiction however is a fine documentation of the under water natural life.The notes are very educative and well reserched.
