[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
As I can recall we had two days with clear fine rainbows last summer, this is the first occasion by the end of July. I have been enquiring about possible effects by photographing rainbows with POL-CIR filter, but so far I got no good answers…

My first experience with this was last year, when I photographed this magnificent rainbow as I was driving across the Dovrefjell mountain plateau. At least I thought so. When I downloaded the pictures upon my return home I discovered to my surprise there was no rainbow!

A POL-CIR filter will remove some of the light reflected from for instance water. A rainbow is water, but the question is weather the light is refracted, reflected or maybe a bit of both.

By coincident I made a discovery while photographing a rainbow last month. By full polarizing effect and camera in landscape position I get great rainbow images. However as I turn the camera 90 degrees clockwise to portrait format the rainbow disappears, but only through the viewfinder as it is still there in front of me…

Anyone around with similar experiences?

Anyone with an explanation to what I have described above?

The image shown here is slightly underexposed, photographed with a polarizing filter.

Hi Pablo,
beautiful rainbow against a lively green view.
Well exploited light and greyish hills make it so well seen.

Regards,
Foozi

Hi Pablo

This is a very beautiful photo you present us but probably a much more interesting discussion.
I perfectly understand what you meant in your note and although i don't have a similar shot as an example, it happened to me before, in the first days of me using the circular polarizer, when i usually forgot to turn it every time
i turned the camera. You see, what happens is when you knock the camera 90 degrees in any direction, you virtually spin the polarizer fully and therefore either give it a full reflection or you cut the reflection down completely. It's probably easiest to play with it near a lake/river/pond or simply in front of your computer at home, if you have an LCD monitor.
Anyway, back to the thing with the rainbow, this is a fine experiment from you and one i'll be looking to try myself one day :)
The picture itself is lovely. Being a bit underexposed, the colors are all very intensified and stand out well.
Overall, a charming capture and a terrific post.

Bravo and TFS

Hi Pablo.
Yes, it's your firm landscape picture with brilliant reproduction of beauty and state of the nature and weather. Great POV and framing of the beautiful place. Colours as well as details and sharpness are breathtaking. Well done and kind wishes.
Alexei.

Hello Pablo,
Always fascinating to see rainbows..and in such a beautiful landscape even more. I like the light of this shot and the contrast between vegetation in the sun and grey background. Interesting and funny note.
I have no rainbow-pictures in my archives, never had the camera on me at the right moment:-(.
Thanks and kind regards
Anne

Ciao Pablo, lovely composition with fascinating rainbow, splendid light, very well done, have a good week end, ciao Silvio

hello pablo
wonderul shot of this rainbow in a beautiful sunlight
superb POV and composition with the trees who have still her green summer colors
Have a great WE
Jacqueline

Hi Pablo,

The capture of the rainbow is an asset to the composition. The trees are framing well the rainbow. The point of view takes my eyes toward the mountain which is giving depth to the photo. The early evening light is enhancing the colors. have a nice day.

Pierre

Hi Pablo,
This is a nice reminder of what we had just a few weeks ago. Now the colors are slowly fading and the color grey will take its place once again.
I like the different layers of the landscape and how the also fade into a greyish color.
On your experience with the CP filter and the rainbow. I am sorry, but I didn't experience it or know why that happend. Probably something to do with refraction and reflection.
TFS,
Niek
