European viper (Vipera berus) (żmija zygzakowata in Polish).

It is one of 8 or 9 reptile's species found in Poland (one of the species - Lacerta viridis occurs in Poland ocasionally) and one of 4 snake species.
Additionally it is the only species of reptiles in Poland that can be harmful for man.

It grows till 80 cm. Males are usually grey, females - brown. The characteristic feature of this animal is its dark pattern on the back (like zigzag - the Polish name of the viper is just from the pattern).

Habitat: forests and their edges, steppes etc.

Biology: Viper is active during the day and twilight, it lives in cooler places, it doesn't like strong insolation. Vipera berus overwinters in big groups in holes in the ground, old trunks from late September till the beginning of April. It feeds on mice, birds and frogs.
It is viviparous animal, young vipers are born in late August or in September.

In the picture you can see the viper in its characteristic pose while resting, hidden on the ground between plants.

Changes to the original photo: cropping, changing levels: 2; 1,00; 231, sharpening.

Hi Ania,
I think you have a fine capture in difficult situations, a slightly frontal angular approach probably would work better. The eye seems a little hazed over maybe moulting.

Hej!

Witam
Gratuluję szczęścia i odwagi ;-) Może technicznie nie jest super ale trzeba mieć szczęście żeby spotkać żmiję i odwagę żeby jej zrobić zdjęcie.
