[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
The Large Copper (Lycaena dispar) is a European butterfly of the family Lycaenidae. The British race of this butterfly (dispar) has been extinct for over 150 years (since 1864). Most of our knowledge of its life cycle and ecology comes from studies of the similar race (batavus) found in The Netherlands. The species can be identified by the silvery hindwing undersides, from the large specimens of the related, more common, drier habitat species Lycaena virgaureae and Lycaena hippothoe.The species has been in severe decline in Britain due to the great reduction of fen habitat due to expansion of the human population. In the rest of the Western Europe, the draining of wetlands and building and agricultural activity on shallow riverbanks has caused a strong decline. In Eastern Europe, undeveloped riverbanks and deltas are a habitat for the species, though even there it is somewhat threatened due increasing human influence on these areas.

Hello Pawel,

eye-catching, well composed presentatation, perfectly well isolated from a pleasantly contrasting soft green background.
Telling from the markings, to my knowledge, you have presented a male of the closely related

Scarce Copper (Lycaena virgaureae).

L. dispar usually would show a black spot in the centre of the upper side of forewing, and less well developed black spots at the margins of hindwings.

Bardzo ladna fotka. Piekne, zywe kolory owada na stonowanym i rozmytym tle. Ladna kompozycja. Chyba nigdy nie widzialem motyli z pokrewnych gatunkow z w pelni rozlozonymi skrzydelkami - strasznie niesmiale sa :-)

Yes, this is the Scarce Copper, a lovely butterlfy that is flying here now too. Excellent capture of this one in a fine pose. Fine details and colours that stand out against the green background.

Hello Pawel,

This is a very dynamic image. Your butterfly actually glows. It is probably just me but the orientation of the butterfly feels uncomfortable... like he is going to fall onto my desktop!! I tried a rotation in a workshop just to see how it would look and feel.
I love the out of focus background.
