[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Another white-tailed eagle from my recent trip to Poland. The white-tailed eagle became in Europe almost extinct in the 19 th century. Only in the German-speaking countries a few survived: in Mecklenburg the population at the end of the 19th century was estimated at about 38 breeding pairs, in nearby Schleswig-Holstein there were none since 1876. After that the population increased very slowly, in 1951 4 pairs and after introducing captive-bred birds this rose up to 12 pairs in Schleswig-Holstein. In the more eastern part of Germany the number rose from 40 pairs in 1940 to 174 pairs in 1993. A relative overpopulation made the birds migrate west. However, more to the east on the other side of the border with Poland, in the Oder delta, nowadays a hundred breeding pairs are present. In order to protect them this part was made a nature park in October 2005. By attracting photographers from other countries, who bring money with them and can stimulate the local economy, the preserving organisations try to convince the local inhabitants (mostly poor and unemployed) that protecting the eagles bring more money in than shooting them. The local fisherman even offer trips with their boats for the photographers. A lot of small fish is sold to the photographers in order to lure the eagles in good shooting positions. Hopefully these magnificent birds will last to stay in these wild surrounding were tourists are very seldom seen.

Hi Jan,
Welcome on Treknature. Your first three pictures are very worthwhile!

What a FANTASTIC shot of this eagle! Very beautiful contrasting to the blue sky. You succeeded in framing the bird diagonally in a perfect action.
I like the sharpness and clours. Well done, compliments.
Regards, Ruud

Impressionnant!. Quelle belle image. Il ne manque quasiment pas une plume, et tout ça en plein vol!.
Rare.

Wow... a fantastic capture, Jan. Sharp details on this noble bird of prey... sharp details and good light. Magnificent POV of this bird in flight. The fish in his talons is a bonus. I like the water still dropping off the catch. Well done and TFS. : )
