White Flower spider

| [Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note |
Hello today in my gallery.
Photograph of Flower spider from Misumena family (Kwietnik in Polish), taken in my garden in Mragowo, Poland.
This quite common spider can be seen in many different colours, thay can change them almost like chameleon or octopus;). Below I add some informations about this process.
Flower spiders doesn't build any web or nest, they are great hunters, catching insects much bigger then they are.
Original picture taken in RAF format, little cropped from right side, some colour balance in CS2, noise removed in NeatImage, resized, framed and sharpened for TN.

The Color change:
The color change is made possible by secreting a liquid yellow pigment into the outer cell layer of the body. On a white base, this pigment is transported into lower layers, so that inner glands, filled with white guanine, become visible. If the spider dwells longer on a white plant, the yellow pigment is often excreted. It will then take the spider much longer to change to yellow, because it will have to produce the yellow pigment first. The color change is induced by visual feedback; spiders with painted eyes were found to have lost this ability.
The color change from white to yellow takes between 10 to 25 days, the reverse about six days. The yellow pigments have been identified as kynurenine and 3-hydroxykynurenine.
Classification:
Kingdom: Animalia
Phylum: Arthropoda
Class: Arachnida
Order: Araneae
Family: Thomisidae
Genus: Misumena

I think they are also called Crab Spiders, Adrian.
The one in my recent picture looks like this one and I have determined that it is a Crab Spider.
Very good capture with true rendition of colours this specimen has adopted for the occasion.
Your note too reads well on this theme.

Ram

Czesc Adrian!
Hi Adrian wonderful white spider with fine details and splendid sharpness, very well done, ciao Silvio
