Hi all,

Today another mushroom from my collection. I named the picture fox's head because it remind me this- the shape, big ears, even dark nose can be seen...and the colour as well.

Species shown on photograph is Gyromitra infula, known as the elfin saddle (PL: Piestrzenica infułowata). Not common in Poland, I found it only once, by the lake Glebokie near Mragowo, Poland. Can be found even very late autumn, in coniferous forests.

This is whole image, didn't cropped, taken as JPEG, ISO 200, then some colours and shadow opareting in CS2, resized and sharpened for TN.

Scientific classification:

Kingdom: Fungi
Phylum: Ascomycota
Subphylum: Pezizomycotina
Class: Pezizomycetes
Order: Pezizales
Family: Helvellaceae
Genus: Gyromitra

Description:

Gyromitra infula (Schaeff. ex Fr.) Quél. Cap 3-10cm across, saddle-shaped or 3-lobed, with an incurved margin; reddish brown to dark brown; wrinkled to convoluted. Stem 10-60 x 20mm, hollow, sometimes irregular; whitish to buff. Flesh brittle. Spores ellipsoid, smooth, containing 2 large oil drops, 19-23 x 7-8ľ. Habitat singly or scattered on humus and rotting wood or debris.

Thanks for watching, I hope You like it.
Have a nice day, cheers!

Hi Adrian,
It really looks like a head, it resembled me a mouse's head. Colours and soft texture of the mushroom are nicely captured. TFS

Hi Adrian,
Beautiful shot, and the fungus is really similar to a fox head. :) Great sharpness, DOF, colors, background. This specie's also very rare in Hungary, so You're lucky to find it.
Congrats and tfs, best wishes, László

Adrian,

This looks like a mushroom with an attitude. The first thing I thought when I looked at this shot was that it reminded me of a deer's head. That is definitely one strange mushroom. You've captured this one very well. Nice work Adrian. TFS.

Best Regards,

Martin
