Hi trek friends,

Today I want to present another interesting mushroom species, called The Orange Peel Fungus (Aleuria aurantia)- PL: Dziezka pomaranczowa.
It is quite common but few days ago I found it first time in my life. Looks really strange- like the name says- orange peel:). I found it by the forest path on sandy ground. Location somewhere in south of Olsztyn, Poland.

Some species information found in Wikipadia:

Kingdom: Fungi
Phylum: Ascomycota
Class: Pezizomycetes
Order: Pezizales
Family: Pyronemataceae
Genus: Aleuria

The Orange Peel Fungus (Aleuria aurantia) is a widespread ascomycete fungus in the order Pezizales. The brilliant orange, cup-shaped ascocarps often resemble orange peels strewn on the ground, giving this species its common name.

Description

In Europe, the orange peel may be confused with Otidea or Caloscypha species that are poisonous or of unknown edibility. The North American Audubon Mushroom Field Guide lists orange peel fungi as edible, though not necessarily choice, with no particularly notable continental lookalikes.

Distribution and habitat

The orange peel fungus grows on bare clay or disturbed soil throughout North America and Europe. Aleuria aurantia fruits mainly in late summer and autumn.

About the picture- original shot taken in RAF, contrast and saturation added- shadow of trees takes away some colours. Tripod used. Resized and sharpened.

I must say that I'm not 100% sure about the species name but this one has the most similar description to Aleuria aurantia.
Thank You for any comments for this one.

Hope You like it,
cheers!

TFS and regards, Ulla

hello Adrian
very good color
and sharp picture
thanks
greeting lou

Hi Adrian,
GREAT, GREAT, GREAT! Absolutely wonderful shot, truly a masterpiece. Awesome sharpness, fungi textures and colors. Bravo.
An advice: for signing use font color which is much different from the color of the pic, at least in the corner You chose. For example white would have been better here by my opinion, because the yellow You used may not be seen well.
Tfs, regards, László
