Hello my Friends!
Do you think that it is really something different? Well, both: no and yes :>

- no, because after my last picture this is also a continuation of Diptera photos ;>

and

- yes, because it is rather rarely presented in TN "point of view" for flies as this is a larva.
And this is a larva of Soldier fly Stratiomys (Stratiomyidae). It represents an insect larva of apoid and acephalic type, what means that it has no legs and no head :> Often this type is named a magot.

There are many different types of larvae in insects, and here you can find details how to recognize them :>

Please, feel free to watch different types of larvae in:

- dragonflies (Odonata)

- bugs (Heteroptera)

- grasshoppers (Orthoptera)

- beetles (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae) - one of a few types known in this group

- ant-lions (Neuroptera: Myrmeleonidae)

- moths (Lepidoptera).

And here are some facts about the hero of this photo:

Distribution: in Europe 11 species with different species-range, in Poland 8 species, rather difficult to recognize in larval stage

Habitat: larvae are freshwaters living among water plants or on the bottom, leaving water only to pupated (as specimen from this picture, found on the bank of small pond); adults fly near water reservoirs

Size: larvae up to 55-60mm (!!!), adults much smaller, not bigger that 15-20mm. This specimen was some 50mm

Picture was taken in Budy Grabskie village, Bolimow Landscape Park.

Thank you in advance for your time and visit! :>
Have a nice week!!! :>

Czesc Radek!

Wygladaja dosc groznie i kosmicznie. Ladnie dobrana glebia ostrosci.
Serdecznosci,
Michal

Czesc Radek.

Widać rękę (i oko)profesjonalisty...
Pozdrawiam
Alina

Hi Radomir

Chris

As always, a comprehensive and detailed post accompanied by an excellent photograph! What a strange looking creature my friend, it looks almost alien! DOF is very good, and the detail of both the setting and the larvae are excellent. Very well done.
Paul

Being a scientist, you present your subjects with authentic clarity in your interestingly penned personal notes, Radomir.
The ignormuses like me rush to Wikipedia!
I had no idea about this strange creature until I read your note. So it is the larva of a fly. First experience for me, hence lots of thanks.
The image is very precise and true to reality. The moist grains of sand make a wonderful background for the subject.
TFS and regards.

Hi Radomir,
excellent, your larva collection! It takes a good entomologist to make these pictures and of course a good photographer. I never would have thought that the stratiomyid larvae could yield such an interesting image. Extremely well done, as usual!
Best regards
Dietrich

It had me wondering for just a second, then I realised hat this must be a maggot.
Of course,it is a Soldierfly larvae, and your capture is excellent.
What is the surface it is on ? It almost looks like very fine sand.
Great shot.
Cheers
Steve
