All the best for you in 2008!!!

My wife gave me Canon 400D, wow, what a gift :-) We went to park and I tried to take first photos. Surprisingly it wasn't easy :-) Everything works different than in my previous compact cameras. Autofocus is as fast as light speed, but rest is very hard to master for such beginner as I am :-) So, as I said, we went to park and I started to photograph small and fast birds which were impossible to catch with my old cam. I captured many different species - woodpeckers, jays, tits... On lcd everything looked great. But when I downloaded pictures to my pc I was shocked! Most pictures looked terrible! Dark, blurred and noisy. Funny - noisy pictures from dSLR :-) But it is obvious if you took them with iso 800 with almost no light and mist around. Anyway, I started to work in Photoshop and this is best what I could do with my messed up pictures. This is probably my most post processed picture ever. I did crop, shadow/highlight, exposure correction, brightness correction, sharpening and noise removing.

In workshop you can see original picture :-)

I hope next time I'll do it better or at least there will be more sunlight :-)

Hi Grzegorz,
Welcome to the club! :-D
One get so used to the compact that when trying a dslr the change is so hard to handle.
At least you already made the move, and today are not at the first beginning of the learning curve...
It's so funny to look at the original picture in the workshop, it really was a vary dark day there.
So you made wonders in the PP side, I like the details "hardly got" from the scene, and the pose of the bird.
Want to wish you a Happy New year for you and family, and I'll be following your next pictures.
Warm regards,
JM

Hi Greg,

Happy new year,I suppose you will control your new toy quite fast ,suppose you already know this but now you have the possibility to shoot in RAW mode and you can adjust minor exposure issues more esily then before, tfs and hope to see more of you with the 400D

Paul

Hi Greg !
Congratulations for your new camera ! I remember when I got my own, it is great moment I'm not ready to forget...
And this first picture is not bad at all, the details as well as the BG, the composition, the POV and the pose of the bird are excellent. I really like it. Even if you had to do much PP work, the result looks great. I'm sure that you will learn to use your new camera very fast, and soon we'll see amazing shots from you !
I also wish you a very happy new year (sorry, I'm a bit late )
Valérie.

Hi Greg

Indeed a great gift from you wife, lucky you.

Ha ha, yes the move from S2 to DSLR is much bigger than most would think. It took me weeks to figure out where everything is that you need. And yes, you can still get nosiy pics from a DSLR despite all the reviews saying it doesn't happen. I also think you still need to do post-processing with most shots, so don't worry.

But this is a good first shot of you local woodpecker, especially at ISO 800 and a big improvement from the priginal in workshop. I guess its still winter there, so the light should imprve as summer comes along. Wait till you try macro with your new lens, anything less than f16 has poor DOF in my opinion, but you can get really good results with patience.

cheers
Chris

Hi Greg

I know i'm late on this matter, but i want to wish you and your loved ones all the best in the New Year and also to congratulate you on your lovely present :)
I'm sure you were a very good boy to get such a nice gift for Christmas ;)

I also know that i've missed a lot of your photos, but out the entire bunch i picked this one because i know exactly how you felt that day!
It was the same with me...despair! I was very proud that i had my first dSLR and i want out to take some shots, and much to my amazement, all of them were blurred when i downloaded them on the PC. I had the exact same body and lens as yours.
Soon after, i bought my other lens, too and that changed my perception. It is A LOT easier to shoot a wide-angle photo that a telephoto one.
I don't know about you, but even now i still have difficulties in getting the exact same quality from a subject far away than as one from a closer focal length.
However, i'm actually very happy with the landscape progress that i have had since the dSLR jump :)

Now for your shot here, i must actually congratulate you for it. I had much poorer results the first time :)
Underexposing a shot is very easy with this type of camera, but i think you corrected that very well in PP.
Other than that, the sharpness is good and the DOF used is also well chosen (another tricky factor in this new world :))

That being said, i wish you all the best with your new toy and "only great light" ;)
Bravo and TFS
Horia
