The Mallard (Anas platyrhynchos)

The mallard is 56–65 cm long, has a wingspan of 81–98 cm, and weighs seven to eight pounds. The breeding male is unmistakable, with a green head, black rear end and a yellow bill tipped with black (as opposed to the dark brown bill in females). The female Mallard is light brown, like most female dabbling ducks. However, both the female and male Mallards have distinct purple speculum edged with white, prominent in flight or at rest (though temporarily shedded during the annual summer molt). In non-breeding (eclipse) plumage the drake becomes drab, looking more like the female, but still distinguishable by its yellow bill and reddish breast.

Most often, they prefer wetlands, where highly productive waters produce large amounts of floating, emergent and submerged vegetation Wetlands also produce a great deal of aquatic invertebrates on which mallards feed.

Mallards consume a wide variety of foods, including vegetation, insects, worms, gastropods and arthropods, although they are not restricted to these. They also take advantage of human food sources, such as gleaning grain from crops.

Female gives loud series of quacks. Male makes softer, rasping "rab," also a grunt and whistle during display. Wings whistle in flight.

Hello Krzysztof,
A nice one of a couple of Mallards from your archives in the warmth of summer that we hope arrives soon. They look like they might be young males as the bills are turning yellowish.
Nice technnical qualities and pleasing composition.
Thanks for sharing this one,
Ivan

Hehehe, chyba raczej "just two ducks" ;)
Pozdrowionka,
Radek

PS. Wkrotce wrzuce na TN bardziej "irlandzkie" klimaty, zdjecia juz "czekaja" ;)

A fine capture in a natural diagonal dividing the land from the water Krzysztof, the sharply delineated ducks are sunning themselves against a nice reflection in the water, a serene scene indeed!

Hi Krzysztof.
Amazing of quality picture of the wonderful scene. All is great. Diagonal composition of the image, superb DOF and perfect sharpness of the beautiful ducks, wonderful grass carpet and attractive full of reflections water surface. Bravo and all the best.
Alexei.

Must be the females knitting circle with perhaps the two waiting for a thr4id...or a forth for Bridge perhaps:-) Nice and sharp...very sharp and well earth toned in colour overall...Fine image!

Hi Chris,
Just a duck..or two..or three, or ;-}
I like the diagonal split to your frame. Great detail, color, DOF, and exposed well.
Well done,
Howard

Hi Krzysztof, good diagonal composition with lovely couple, wonderful details and excellent sharpness, very well done, ciao Silvio

Hi Chris,
You go almost three years back into your archives to show us this fine pair of Mallards.
I like your POV that places the subjects in one of the two triangles you have segmented the rectangle of the frame into. The other triangle gives us the depth of view.
Very sharp and crisp image the sunlight.
The colours are quite natural and pleasant on account of that.
Thanks and best regards.
