Little break from damselfies today. Another shot of Tiger Beetle, this time in action. Look at its big and sharp jaws! Bigger then insect's head, sharp and with three long spikes. And believe me - this creature knows well how to use this weapon!

Interesting thing about insect's eyes - do you see two bright, orange spots nearby? They're well visible from long distance. I don't know what is it exactly. Maybe part of body, but maybe some kind of parasitic mites?

Picture taken in Botanic Garden sandy area during very hot Sunday.

Hello Greg !
Wow, this one looks like a real monster ! I'm happy he'so small ! :-) But you managed to get a splendid picture, full of details, with nautral colors, perfect composition and excellent POV. Nice focus on the head. Sorry, but I can't help for the two orange spots on the eye, I've no idea.
Greetings from France,
Valerie.

Hola Grzegorz,
Extraordinaria imagen, no es fácil lograr este acercamiento con tanto detalle de estes insectos que suelen ser muy esquivos, enhorabuena por el magnífico trabajo. Un cordial saludo

Hello Grzegorz, great close-up capture of an tiger beetle. TFS. Regards,
Mehmet

Hi Greg

Good shot of the tiger beetle though I think the DOF is a bit narrow. This is teh problem with the Sigma 70-300, you have to use f13 or more to get reasonable DOF.
Apart from that its a great moment. These guys are agressive. I don't think we get them in Australia. I wish I'd spent a bit longer with the one I found in Thailand. Maybe I'll have to go back.

best wishes
Chris

Hi Grzegorz. What a unusual looking insect . i wonder why the green legs. You have captured fine detail and colours. Good timing to get it with its food. well done TFS.
Nick..

Hello Grzegorz,
Nice presentation of this "monster". The colours of the legs and antens are very nice. Interesting note of Chris (sandpiper2) about the DOF. I have the same camera and lens than you and also sometimes the same problem with DOF. Maybe we must try to use F13 and see the result. Thanks for sharing,
Catherine

Hello Friend, This is just brilliant and sharp picture. The composition is fine. The eye is just superb. Ganesh

I neve knew you could use your 70-300mm for a macro like this, Greg, and I always thought it was good for distant shots of birds only!
One never stops learning on TN.
This action shot with the entire focus on the action itself is mind-boggling in terms of precision. I am stunned at the finesse of those jaws and spiky colourful legs of the predator.
Greg, you stand apart as a wizard in nature photography!
Thanks and take care.
Ram

Ha ... I missed this one, but it is Sooo cool!
I've always wanted to see a Tiger beetle using those big jaws.
Excellent shot Greg!
Cheers
Steve
