[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Fresh picture from todays morning. I went to hunt for woodpeckers [look at my yesterdays note], but of course I didn't find any one. So I took closer look to my favourite 'desert' area of Botanic Garden. Surprisingly there were many different species of insects. Even Tiger beetles which [as I read hunt when temperature is over 30C - today was maybe about 20C]. Suddenly I heard buzzing nearby. I saw very strange scene - it looked like mass copulation of wild bees. One female and many males fighting, flying and waiting for opportunity. Few minutes later only one male left. For some reason it couldn't 'disconnect' from female which was... dead. Fascinating. Romance turned to thriller :-)

Hi Greg,
This is strange behaviour from usually well ordered and civilised honey bees.
I wonder what was going on here?
An interesting drama to witness and capture anyway.
Cheers & TFS
Steve

Witam
Widać że owady oszalały, wiosna w pełni.
Bardzo ładne naturalne kolorki.

Hi Grzegorz,

quite a sight these fighting bee males for a dead female! I'm not too surprised about this, because odors (pheromones) play a role in attracting bee males and getting them aroused. Deceptive orchids (Ophrys) exploit this and attract sex hungry males by odor to to the pollinating work. What kind of bee species have you got here? It's difficult with wild bees. It could be Macropis but Macropis favors humid areas, not your "desert" and appears in summer. Different other hairy bees come to mind, like Megachile.

Ciao Greg, this is very hard, fantastic macro, fine details and splendid sharpness, very well done, ciao Silvio
