Pieris, the whites or garden whites, is a widespread genus of butterflies of the family Pieridae. Many species of this genus have caterpillars which feed on cabbage and other members of the Brassicaceae. The chemical basis of this association with a certain plant group has been studied for over 100 years, and is now known to occur via a number of biochemical adaptations to chemicals called glucosinolates in these plants. In contrast to most other insects, Pieris caterpillars are able to detoxify these chemicals, and have become so specialised that they will not eat any food without glucosinolates. The Pieris females, in turn, check for the presence of glucosinolates before laying eggs on a plant.

The wings are white, with black tips on the forewings of both males and females, the female also has two black spots on each forewing. The underside is a pale greenish and serves as excellent camouflage when at rest. The black markings are generally darker in the summer brood.

Caterpillar host plants: Brassica napus, Brassica oleracea, Sinapis arvensis, Tropaeolum majus
Flight period: Europe: two generations V-IX
Habitat: gardens, meadows forest edges, common in different habitats

Hello Krzysztof
This is a fine capture of the Large white set in a classic scene with the thistle (i think its a thistle!) windblown seed head and a great oof background, The only downside in my opinion is that you have oversharpened the subject a bit to much making it look a little out of place in the scene, this could of course be my monitor displaying the image inaccurately.
All the Best
Billy

Hi Chris,a classic butterfly in a classic point of view...it seem simple but i know the Pieris and in my country are one of the most difficult butterflies to take, they are always in mouvement..ehehe...impressive sharpness, colors and details,my best compliment,Luciano

Hi Krzysztof.
I like full of attractive objects nice picture. Flower, butterfly seed on a FG and twigs on a BG create and wonderful nature composition. I like cold a bit and very delicate colours and soft lighting. They are so artistic. Composition is great as well as POV. Details (despite of sunlight absence) are excellent. Blurriness of the BG is amazing too. Well done and kind regards.
Alexei.

Hej,
Mam wrazenie, ze motyl jest lekko przeostrzony - szczegolnie widac to na drugiej parze skrzydel i na wloskach. Ale poza tym piekne swiatlo i kolorystyka.
Serdecznosci,
Michal
