[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Today angel-like White Plume Moth (Pterophorus pentadactyla). Picture taken in rather hard conditions - during heavy rain and wind. I spotted this moth on small meadow in Botanic Garden during search for Lycaenidae. With umbrella in one hand and camera in second one I took serie of photos, which appeared to be surprisingly good :-)

The Pterophoridae or plume moths are a family of Lepidoptera with unusually modified wings. Though they belong to the Apoditrysia like the larger moths and the butterflies, unlike these they are tiny and were formerly included among the assemblage called "Microlepidoptera".

The forewings of plume moths usually consist of two curved spars with more or less bedraggled bristles trailing behind. This resembles the closely related Alucitidae (many-plumed moths) at first glance, but the lazzer have a greater number of symmetrical plumes. The hindwings are similarly constructed, but have three spars. A few genera have normal lepidopteran wings.

The usual resting posture is with the wings extended laterally and narrowly rolled up. Often they resemble a piece of dried grass, and may pass unnoticed by potential predators even when resting in exposed situations in daylight. Some species have larvae which are stem- or root-borers while others are leaf-browsers.

Economically important pterophorids include the Artichoke Plume Moth (Platyptilia carduidactyla), an Artichoke (Cynara cardunculus) pest in California, while the Geranium Plume Moth (Platyptilia pica) and the Snapdragon Plume Moth (Stenoptilodes antirrhina) can cause damage to the ornamental plants Garden Geranium (Pelargonium x hortorum) and Common Snapdragon (Antirrhinum majus), respectively. Other plume moths have been used as biological control agents against invasive plant species – Lantanophaga pusillidactyla against the shrub verbena Lantana camara, and Oidaematophorus beneficus against Mistflower (Eupatorium riparium).

Hi Grzegorz,

Fantastic macro capture, everything (exposure, sharpness etc.) is excellent, but what are those concentric rings (4 overall) on the bottom and left? Waterdrops or any other dirt on the lens? Except for these a fabolous capture.
Friendly regards from Hungary, László

PS: just read the note. Understood.

Hello Greg,
Excellent title. (To the amazing song of the Scorpions?)
Great photo in beautiful clear and contrasting colours against the dark BG. Very good sharp details in a wonderful composition.
Regards,
Peter

I think you got lucky with this one,no?
The detail is pretty good, and not burnt out oo much from the close proximity of the flash.
The wings on this look like the wings of birds with individual feathers isn't it ?
Cool.
Cheers
Steve

I feel daft or at best inadequate...my eyes and mind tell me I wish I could do this, but my body soon overcomes...yet I can appreciate art in nature and that's what young good photographers are for...Well done!
Bob

Never seen a moth from such an angle, Greg.
Delightful picture taken while it rained; you are a magic man.
It is the legs more than anything else that draw my attention.
Superb picture and thanks for sharing it.

Hallo Greg
You have captured this "angle" with great detail and clarity, especially the greenish eye and the matchstick legs. The wings, remind me a lot of a birds tailpiece feathers. A delightful image, which I enjoyed looking at, especially the fattish body of the insect. Thanks for sharing.
Best regards.
Anna

Hi Grzegorz.
Perfect presentation of a macro lens and splendid specimen of the moth. Exposure of the image and reproduction of the white "clothes" of the insect are fantastic. DOF is great, sharpness is extreme, flash work is precise and pictured scene at whole is wonderful. Best regards and TFS.
Alexei.
