Hello Chris,
I think it's
-- Melitaea diamina
a rather worn and old specimen.
The picture is well focused and the background does not distract, so that the view is only attracted by the butterfly.
Best wishes, Peter

Hello Chris,
I cant help with the ID on this one I'm afraid.
Its a very good capture of it though.
Nice detail and POV,a good clear background which makes the butterfly stand out nice & sharp.
Great shot,well done.
All the best for 2007

Faktycznie szkoda skrzydelek ale jesli masz watpliwosci co do gatunku to nic nie podpowiem chociaz motyl wydaje sie pospolity. Fajne kolory i glebia ostrosci.
Wszystkiego najlepszego w Nowym Roku - Tobie i rodzinie!

Hello Chris,
clear and sharp picture of a butterfly that definitely seems to be a puzzle. Its appearance is quite unusual.
Checking some literature (Higgins/Riley, and Tolman/Lewington) I found only two species that look very much like it:
Melitaea asteria (Freyer 1828), and
Melitaea varia (Meyer-Dür 1851) - dark variation of female .
But both species are reported from high elevations of the Alps only.
Looks like you have you discovered something new, at least regarding distribution to Poland.
Thank you, and best regards,
Peter

Hello Chris,
I would agree with Peter, it's most likely a worn specimen of M. diamina. But it depends really on where you found it. M. diamina is mostly found along streams, in wetlands and moist areas.
Nice and sharp capture of this very old and worn specimen in a nice pose.
TFS and regards, Ulla

Hi Chris.
I like beautiful subject selected for shooting: cute butterfly on thinnest stem. Its great sharpness, details and fine colours are wonderful. Colourful and smooth BG is wonderful too. Perfect done and TFS.
Alexei.
