The Long-tailed Duck (Clangula hyemalis) is a medium-sized sea duck. Adults have white underparts. The male has a long pointed tail and a dark bill lighter near the tip. In winter, the male has a dark cheek patch on a mainly white head and neck, a dark breast and mostly white body. In summer, the male is dark on the head, neck and back with a white cheek patch. The female has a brown back and a relatively short pointed tail. In winter, the female's head and neck are white with a dark crown. In summer, the head is dark.

Their breeding habitat is cold northern oceans and large lakes in the North Atlantic region, Alaska, northern Canada, northern Europe and Russia. The nest is located on the ground near water; it is built using vegetation and lined with down.

They are migratory and winter along the eastern and western coasts of North America, on the Great Lakes, coastal Europe and Asia. This is a gregarious duck, and will form large flocks at that time of year. The most important wintering area is the Baltic Sea, where a total of about 4.5 million gather.

They feed by diving, swimming underwater. They mainly eat mollusks, crustaceans and some small fish. Although they usually feed close to the surface, they are capable of diving to depths of 60m (200 feet)

Hello Marcin,
It's very interesting the off center focus on this photo, that let us admire in full detail the duck's beak.
The dark brown of the background gets the best of the composition.
Perhaps closing a little the aperture would be enough to get a little more focus on the neck of the bird.
Well done,
JM

Hi Marcin, this is an unusual angle here. The close up feathers are a bit close and over-exposed, but the eye and beak look good. It is interesting to see the patterns on the beak and the colours too. Your notes are good to read too. TFS

Hello Marcin,
The unusual POV of this close-up portrait of the Long-tailed Duck shows in detail the construction of the beak, which I find interesting.
The eye is good with the catchlight as well.
TFS, regards, Ivan

PS. unfortunately several hundred of these ducks have been found dead on the shores of the Island of Gotland. Poison or oil in the Baltic Sea!

Unusual angle but great detail of the beak looks pretty angry interesting viewpoint different! thanks for sharing rgds Necip.
