| Calvatia is a genus of puffball mushrooms within the order Lycoperdales. The genus includes the spectacular giant puffball C. gigantea. Species in the Calvatia genus are edible when young, but it should be kept in mind that some of the species are undesirable to eat, for example Calvatia fumosa which has a very pungent odor. Modern classifications place this genus, along with the rest of the family Lycoperdaceae, into the order Agaricales (Wikipedia). |
