Thrift Clearwing Synansphecia muscaeformis
(Esper, 1783)

Wingspan 15-18 mm.

With a mainly western distribution, this clearwing is mainly found around sea-cliffs or rocky coastal areas where the foodplant occurs commonly.

It occurs in suitable localities in western England, Wales, and parts of Scotland, as well as southern Ireland, Poland.

The moths fly in June and July, and may be found visiting the flowers of the foodplant as well as those of thyme (Thymus). They can also be attracted by the use of pheromones.

The foodplant is thrift (Armeria maritima), the caterpillars feeding in the roots and crowns.

Hi Marx,

such a beauty, such a rare and curious specimen, Marx! It's a wonderful sight, the background kept nicely unfocussed. Needless to say that I have never seen such a moth. I love to see such exceptional shots on TN, thanks for this one.

A great shot of this striking Clearwing.
We don't have this in NZ,but we do have a Currant Clearwing that eats Blackcurrant & Redcurrant bushes.
Very interesting.

Hello marx,

Very good close-up of this insect. The image is rasor sharp sp that good details of the insect can be observed. The colors of the out of focus flower makes a nice background.
