Issoria lathonia taken in Botanic Garden. It was very hot day so wings of butterfly weren't open. Polish name of this insect is related to pearls - now you know why :-)

The Queen of Spain Fritillary (Issoria lathonia) is a butterfly of the Nymphalidae family. It is common in southern Europe, migrating as far north as south Scandinavia every summer. It is also found in North Africa, India, Central Asia, Himalayas and China.

Heat-dependent, this species is found breeding on the hottest places of the foodplants of the larvae (prefers Viola tricolor and Viola arvensis). The adult is a strong flyer, and may be found anywhere but forests.

The eggs of this species are laid on the Wild Pansy (Viola tricolor).

Flight time is between March and October, size is between 38 mm and 46 mm, and is usually found at altitudes between sea level and 2700 m.

Hi Grzegorz,

Marvellous capture of the Queen of Spain Fritillary! The colors are so great and so are the sharpness and POV. The eyes and the textures of the butterfly are very well shown. The flower looks like a great modelling platform for this adorable fritillary :) The flower enhances the beauty of the picture drastically.
Very well captured!

thanks and regards,
Paras Bhalla

Hello Grzegorz,
Very beautiful and colorful shot of the interesting Issoria lathonia. Nice framing and fine sharpness. One of the better shots of Issoria I have seen.
Like you I often go to our Botanical garden where there are many butterflies and other insects. Unfortunately because I was sick the last weeks I couldn't go there for quite a while:-(
Have a nice weekend
Anne

Hello Grzegorz,
a very elegant butterfly indeed, put on stage very effectfully by an accomplished photographer, you. Well done! Beautiful sight.
Best regards,
Dietrich

Hi Grzegorz,
brilliantly detailed, well composed, cheerfully colourful portrait of Lathonia, perfectly illustrating the striking mother-of-pearl effect. An image that would well deserve to be presented in full 800pixel width to show all the fine hairs and scales. Thank you!
With best regards,
Peter
