Something new today.

Maybe the photo isn't very clear, but it's a beetle eating a snail. I've seen plenty of such beetles in summer mornings. They were usually sitting on plants feeding on snails or looking for them.

I tried to find ID of this species and I think this may be Phosphuga atrata, but that's not 100% sure.
Thes are a flesh eating beetles, which are quite common in the more neglected parts of the garden. They feed on dead animals of all kinds, but it's favourite diet is live snails. The way they eat is quite interesting because before meal they spray digestive fluid into the snail-shell, and afterwards they suck the prey out of its shell.

I know the DOF is too shalow, but the light was so poor that my camera didn't wanted to set any other f-stop than 2.8 ;)

Intersting bug. So that semitransparent thing is what's left from a snail?

Regards, Petru

So, they don't eat but drink these snails, Monika ;-) Bon apetite! Good picture IMHO, great sharpness and details on beetle's armour, excellent composition, but first of all - fantastic moment. I didn't see anything like that in my life. Big thanks! I love hardcore action ;-)

Nice... Well does this look the same to you (click the link)? If yes than it is a Phosphuga atrata.

You are doing great stuff with your Coolpix. This is another excellent shot. Well done.

Hi Monika,
The composition and framing are excellent here. The detail on the beetle is very good for the f2.8 Colors in this low light are well saturated. You have captured a great shot on this feeding beetle.

Very good capture Monika, I've not seen a beetle like this before and I've not seen one eating a snail. Lovely Brown colours :-)
