Today a set of photos showing wasp during cleaning.

I found this wasp "swimming" in bowl with dogs food. I took her out of there and put on the stone fence in my garden. She started to clean herself and I took some pictures of it. I didn't know which one post, so here's a collection of four images, quite strongly cropped from original pictures
.

Here's some info that explain why wasps spend much time cleaning their antenae?

These strange horns on insects heads are one of the most important and remarkable parts of their bodies. They can be used for hearing, smelling or even talking?
The wasp's antennae have a short, stiff handle called scape and a long, flexible tip called flagellum. The scape moves by a round ball-and-socket joint, and so serves to change the position of the flagellum, which is composed of numerous small joints covered with hearing and smelling organs of microscopic size.
Besides this the antennae bear a great number of short tactile hairs which are incredibly sensitive. Their little owners are doubtless able to discover the shapes and qualities of objects much more accurately than we could discover them by our blunter sense of touch.
Try to leave something sweet in your garden in summer. In few minutes you will probably hear humming of wasp. They have very keen sense of smell and quickly find food by scent alone.

Antennae are so important thet they simply have to be clean all the time. Insects have even special organs like miniature brushes on the legs or proper shape of jaws in the mouth to clean them.

Another great macro made by Monika ! It is ineresting the movement during the cleaning ! I also appreciate the complementary note... Congratulations and thanks for sharing.

Hi Monika,
Very nice collage of shots on this wasp. The exposure looks good on all of them. Great colors and detail in each shot. Well done with great notes!
Scott

Great presentation - note and photos - of the daily habit of this insect.
Tehchnically everything OK. Actually I'll not write anymore about technical issues, except when I feel that is something improvable, because your shots are usually technically OK or more than OK.

Regards, Petru

Hello Monika, a lovely set of four. I'm beginning to doubt your fear of wasps and bees, you post a lot of them :-)

Each one is a good shot and the colours are very nicely done. Interesting note too. Very well done!

Hi Monica

This is excellent work. Composition, POV and DOF of each shot is very good. The composition of the whole is also super. If you run your eyes over it, you can almost see him washing himself.

This is good, very good. Good macro. Good sharp focus and colour balance. I like the collage too.

Great post Monika, nice series of images all with good clarity and detail showing well this cleaning process. Yes, very well done on this.

Good for you... saving it's life. I have swimming pool at home and have the same problem there. I find it fascinating that not one bee or wasp has ever stung me when I take it out of the water. I think they are too exhausted or ... ??

This is a very nice collage showing the cleaning so nice. Nice note to accompany the set as well. Very well done.
