[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
This is a tiny weevil found on raspberry shrub in my garden. I couldn't find any good ID for this one, but as I know that's almost always very difficult.

Weevils make up the largest closely-related family in the animal kingdom. There are over 35,000 kinds. All are strictly plant feeders and most of them prefer some special plant. Relatively few are injurious to crops and those few are the most destructive insect pests known. Maybe you heard about Cotton Weevil, Granary Weevil, Rice Weevil, Clover Leaf Weevil, Strawberry Weevil, Sweet Potato Weevil, Sugar Cane Weevil, Hazelnut Weevil, Acorn Weevil and so on.

If not, I'm sure you have at least one unpleasant experience of finding fat worms in tasty fruit you wanted to eat. Very probable these were young of another weevil, Plum Curculio for example. The adults of such fruit weevils become active about blossom time, when they mate. Then the females lay eggs in the holes made in newly formed fruits. They use their long snouts to drill these holes. As the larvae feed and grow, they cause much of the fruit to drop before it is ripe, or make it unfit for eating and marketing. The mature grubs leave the fallen fruit to burrow into the soil where they become transformed into another generation of little snout beetles.

I don't know if the one on my picture is some kind of Raspberry Weevil or not, but I found some of them there. All I know so far is that the worms usually found in rapberries are "kids" of other kind of beetle Byturus tomentosus known as Raspberry beetle.

You show this little fellow real sharply Monika. They are strange creatures, and I have seen them in NZ too, but never realised that they were weevils. Nice and sharp, and well composed, thank you.
Janice

Tiny bug. Can go unnoticed when you pick wild raspberries, but sure noticeable when you eat them together! (happend to me, really nasty taste!) Good so know by name the culprit (thanks to your note).

Regards, Petru

Excellent shot with beautiful colour, great detail and good use of DOF to concentrate on the subject. Nicely blurred BG, though maybe a bit much of it. I closer crop may be better. As is it is an EXCELLENT capture!

Hi Monika
I really like the position of the weevil and the colours of the raspberry and background. It's strange to see a raspberry so close up. Excellent contrasts.

Fascinating macro! Very well done Monika!

My stay in South East Alabama in the early 70's got me aquainted with the Boll Weevil which the citizens of Enterprise, Alabama honored in 1919. Here is the story.
Love those raspberries...;-)
Thanks for sharing,
Dave

Hello,
It's a very nice shot of this really small weevil of the Apionidae family. Most probably it's a member of genus Apion itself.
Nice idea, exposition and background. Also I like the title very much :-)
Best greetings,
Michal

Wooooooooooooooow!

Beautiful macro, very wonderful!
Good DOF and colors!

You make very beautful shots!

Chris
