One of my favourite themes - crab spiders with prey.

This is Flower Crab spider Misumena vatia with quite a big prey Ringlet butterfly Aphantopus hyperantus .

If you take a look at this picture you will see quite similar moment captured in a quite different environment - sunny meadow.

This picture have been taken few days before in a forest. The light was quite poor hence the dark mood and unfortunatelly, not very good DOF. I decided to take a close up on the spider to emphasize the difference in size between the hunter and it's prey. Btw, the difference here isn't that big. These spiders are able to catch even bigger prey.

I find this shot fascinating, and could look at it for an age. It's truly incredible that such a small spider can bring an insect of this size down. Amazing.
Thank you for sharing this with us Monika. You have already pointed out the light and dof issues, but with images like this, who cares! Great stuff.

Hello Monika, that's a large dinner for such a small spider. Nice capture. Horrible to expose but you did a pretty good job. Very good shot.

Hi,

This is an excellent shot!!
Excellent sharpness, color and composition

Excellent and scary capture you have here Monkia but that is nature of course and this butterfly will soon end up as a dry holster swinging in the wind.

The light is handled very clever not to burn the white spider but I think you could have improved it by lighten up the shadow area (the butterfly) to get more details. The sharpness/dof is very good - as usual and I like the dramatic composition.

Hi Monika,
Both shots are outstanding. I have always said it is good to be as high up as possible on the food chain. The exposure is excellent with beautiful colors and sharp detail. You have captured an excellent momentin both shots. Great work!

Hello Monika!

I don't know why, but I think heavy metal music is perfect as soundtracf for this kind of pictures ;-) Violence again! Great! Small but strong and brave! Big but weak and unlucky! Great action! In theatres near you, soon!

Difficult conditions, but a very dramatic moment captured. Well done in spotting this tiny battle for survival.
Regards, Nigel.

Quite an amazing scene here, Monika. Hard to imagine how this little crab spider can handle this "big" butterfly. How do these crabs catch such huge prey? I don't see evidence of a net. Do they use poison?
TFS. : )

This just goes to show these little predators are totally capable of preying on just about anything, I saw my neighbor get dragged behind his house by one of these tough little critters never to be heard from again. Excellent shot Monika. :)

Hi Monika,
unbelievable to see a crab spider that small having killed a butterfly many times its size. Very dramatic close up with excellent details and colours. Thanks and regards,
Peter

Brilliant shot Monika, you really seem to come up with these unusual and intriguing macros. You are a specialist there. Great post, well done.

Good capture Monika,
That's a lot of butterfly for such a tiny spidy.
Perfect framing, lovely BG........I can't see anything sweet in this iamge.....oh wait.....the little thistle ;)
Thanks for posting, have a great week my friend ;)

You really like this spider-butterfly combo, isn't it? You got several shots like that. All (posted) are great in dynamics, which actually is supposed to be. Lots of action in this one too. Did you watched the whole scene? Was the spider able to catch this huge prey, or the butterfly managed to escape?

Regards, Petru

Cześć,
dwa okazy w jednym kadrze, świetny strzał. Podoba mi się jakość fotografii. Dobra nota i robota (ale się rymnęło).

Hello Monika,

I am running behind in my critiques and have decided to expedite the process by this method, once again.

However, I did wish to give a well deserved smiley for this wonderful posting.

An excellent capture, for both of you!

Thank you, for your understanding.

Awesome shot Monika!
Very beautiful with a nice composition!
Thanks,
Dave

btw the mood appears excellent for this one...;-)

That's a lot of prey!

Really nice look to the photo - it's colour but black and white!
Super sharpness.
Interesting composition.
I suppose my only nit would bee the shallow DOF - not all of the spider is in focus. I don't really know how big the spider is but I would guess that the DOF is about 2cm.

Witaj,
Piękne ujęcie - choć tragiczne dla motyla.
Ciekawe ile czasu czekałaś na takie ujęcie? :-)
BDB kadr.

Witaj,

Wow, niesamowite, pieknie uchwycone.
