This little fellow was a lovely surprise for me.

We had a great sunny weather on Saturday so I decided to go for a long walk to the forest. I had hope to meet some deers or wild boars but, of course, I never can find them when I look for them.

Anyway, when I was getting back, very near my house, I've found this lovely bird.
At first I heard the loud sound he made (something like "keek") and after a while I saw him. I was a bit surprised because I've never seen such tiny woodpecker before. It was the size of a sparrow and, what was even more surprising he allow me to came very close. I was about 5m from him.
Next quite unusuall thing is the fact it was feeding on the tree trunks lying on the ground. I've never seen any woodpecker feeding almost on the ground. They're almost always hide somewhere in the tops of the trees. In WS you can see a picture taken from a larger distance when I didn't know I will be able to came so close to him.
It seems he found a nice meal under the bark of the pine trees and he didn't want to leave it so easily. When I get too close he just flew a bit farther and start to search the bark again.

Now I know this probably was Lesser Spotted Woodpecker Dendrocopos minor.
It's the smallest and the least common woodpecker in Poland. It is thought to be very rare but that's probably because it is simply overlooked.

The picture have been taken through binoculars hence not the most perfect quality. This "lenses" produce a lot of noise and there's always a problem with right exposure.

Hi Monika,

Well done on this capture and composition. Excellent work.

Mike

It's are enough to see a Lesser-spotted at all, let alone one near the ground! Very clever use of the tools at hand - I'd like to see the results when you get some serious equipment!
Regards, Nigel.

Very well seen Monika,
Well this really is sweet and lovely ;) What a PERFECT end to your walk
Good detail, colours and sharpness considering you used binoculars to get the shot.
Composition and exposure are good. Good POV and framing.

Hi Monika!
Fantastic capture! I've never seen this kind of woodpecker! Great bird, lovely red cap. I like its pose - it looks slightly curious. And as we can see you've got few places without snow ;-) That's good sign :-) Your favourite season will arrive soon my friend!

I've not seen one of these woodpeckers before, but do have green woodpeckers feeding in and on my lawn all the time. They were there feeding for ants just yesterday.

You can't tell it was taken through binos at all.

Well done and very well caught.

Hi Monika,

Hello Monika, very good shot. I'd love to have a few woodpeckers in my collection. It's a great pose and good composition. Perhaps there is a little loss in detail in the plumage but still very good.

Hi Monika,
A very cute little fellow. Good job on the exposure. Colors and detail look excellent. Good composition and pose!
Scott

This is such a precious image of young woodpecker, he is posing for you, the lighting is real nice and the exposure is spot on. :)

Hi Monika
It's a very charming photo and very well composed, as are all your posts. The quality is excellent considering it's through binoculars.

Hi Monika,
I hadn't seen this picture before, I don't know how I missed it :-) I love these Woodpeckers, this and the Downy are my favourite birds. I have a green one who visits my garden, nowhere near as pretty as these though. A lovely shot, everything technically is great and I love the POV to frame him against the wood and ice. Great shot!
Cheers,
Adrian
