Aglia tau - family Saturnidae.

I've found this moth yesterday just during walking arround my home. There is great European Beech forest near my home. I was looking for the female of this specie. It usually can be found sitting on the bottom part of trees. The females are very heavy and flies not good. The males flies in the day and it's not typical for moths ;-)
I was a little bit surprised when I've found a mele sitting in typical female position. It was very quiet so I could take couple of pictures. I hope you'll like it ;-)

Some information about the specie: wingspan 60-65 mm. The moths appears at the end of april and flies to the end of May. It's very local and can be found only in old European Beech forests.

The males penetrates own territory - it's typical rather for birds - not moths. When another male appears on territory belong to another male - you can observe real battle ;-D

Very atractive caterpilars of this specie will be presented next time I think ;-)

Great POV of this moth, Christoper.
I like the subtle colors and the fine details, especially in the antennae. TFS. : )

Hi Chris,
perfect capture of Agia tau, a species that I have seen many times in Spring every year, but always from the distance, restlessly flying around in the Vienna Woods, never even thinking of taking a seat.
Excellently focussed details, beautiful soft colours. Interesting notes. Very good and rather unusual contribution.
Thank you! Best regards,
Peter
