Dragonfly is a common name for any member of an order of predacious insects. This order is usually divided into two main groups: the damselflies, which hold the wings above the body when resting, and the true dragonflies, which hold the wings spread when resting.
Both types are sometimes known by popular names such as darning needle, devil’s darning needle, snake feeder, snake doctor, and mosquito hawk.
Dragonflies undergo incomplete metamorphosis during their development. Some species simply drop their eggs into the water or on to the stems of aquatic plants; others, including all the damselflies, make slits in the stems of plants at or below the waterline and insert elongated eggs.
Approximately 4,870 species of dragonflies are known, and members of the order are found in all temperate and tropical regions of the world.
Most Temperate Zone species of dragonflies have wingspans of 5 to 8 cm, but tropical species may reach 20 cm.
