You are looking at a crater or orifice of the MOUTH of a VOLCANO at Monte Brasil in the island of Terceira, Azores.

Monte Brasil is classified as a "PROCTECTED LANDSCAPE"
providing a recreational area and resting place as well as a fantastic view over the ocean and the city of Angra do Heroismo. I believe that there are only 8 places in this world with a similar view of the "horizon" where the sea "seems" to be "over" the
land.

To the right is a narrow road that cuts through the edge of the crater & goes to your left up the hill leading one to Sao Joao Baptista Castle where the fabulous wealth brought by the Spanish galleons was held in safe keeping when the ships called from Peru & Mexico at Angra do Heroismo upto 1640 AD. This "fort" has a large, fortified wall 2.5 miles long. From this vantage point the sentinals kept watch. In fact, even during the 2nd. world war, Dr. Salazar had realized its military value.

This island besides being known as "The UNKNOWN PEARL of the ATLANTIC" (please see my posting of 2006-10-26 21:30) was originally called the island of "JESUS CRISTO" in the period when it was being reconnoitred by the Portuguese navigators.

Hence the title: " HIDEOUT of WORLD'S WEALTH."

Hi Aires.
Ou! How the line of horizon in your picture is pleasant for an eye. The captured landscape is beautiful. I like the light in picture center and shadows in left and in right sides. I think the framing is perfect also as well as the colours and exposure. Superb done and TFS.

Hi Mario,
The Acores are really a pearl in the Atlantic. I've been there severall years ago and really found it just amazing. I olny visited San Miguel, but enjoyed the hot springs the different colored lakes, the culture and the people a lot. It is a place I want to visit again and this time with a good camera. Your photo really illustrates what I remember of the Acores.
TFS and thanks for bringing back great memories.
