[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
A rare moth in Portugal.
The photo was tacked in Serra da Estrela, the highest mountain in Portugal, at night, around 22:45, with the flash.
They are very easy to attract by a fluorescent light on a moth trap.
It belogns to the Notodontidae Stauropinae family.
Known as Tawny Prominent in english.
They can reach 50-60 mm of wingspan.
Theire caterpillar feeds on Oak (Quercus) and Beech (Fagus). The size range of fully grown larvae is 35 to 40 mm. The get through several instars to fully grow.
It hibbernates on pupae stage overwinter.
The cocoon could have 25 mm wide with exit whole at the left hand side.
We can see it fly from May till July in Portugal.

What a superb and interesting moth that you have well captured ! It is difficult to see it on wood, a good camouflage in night. Perhaps, for compostion I would have tried to rotate 15deg on right, to have the both in diagonal... Thanks for sharing Paulo.

Hi paulo, good capture, plenty of detail in this capture even the hairs are detailed.
I am not sure about the ident I have just spent some time trying to put another name to it, because for me the shape of the Antenae and the colouration behind the head look wrong to me though moths do vary with locality,

Fantastic shot, Paulo. The wood BG to show camouflage is a great presentation. It is so clear and colorful.. hard to believe it is a night shot. Great use of flash. I particularly like the details of the hairs. Well done :-)

WOW Paulo, we can even see the feather shaped antenae on this male, I suppose.
The horizontal composition is strange, looking to the left, but works very well this time. It has quite a visual impact.
