This is a Pararge aegeria (Linnaeus, 1758).
A common butterfly in Portugal. It fly’s from spring to autumn and we can see it also in some hot days in winter.
Their larva’s feeds on gramineae.
Known as Speckled Wood in english.
It's not a protected species in Portugal.
Usually, it lands with wide open wings.
It's a bit difficult to get it with the wings closed.
This is a newly individual because the colored wings yet. As the days passed and it gets older the wings looses the shiny brown color.

Beautiful and interesting butterfly Paulo. Good composition, details and colours. Thanks for sharing
Janice

It is great just to see the difference between identical species. the speckled woods that fly around the woodland around my house are much less orange and brown, more off-white and brown.

The bracken background always works really well.

TFS

bonjour,
très belle composition.
Le sujet est net, les couleurs tranchent bien.
j'aime beaucoup !
Bravo et merci

Paulo,

Great DOF and BG. The composition and POV are also good on this sharp pic. TFS,
Sheriff
