[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
A medium-sized, fairly robust damselfly. Females have broader abdomen than males, and more extensive black, with yellow bands "between" abdominal segments. There are three forms of female showing varying amounts of black on the abdomen.
Is known as "Large red damselfly" in english.
The wingspan amounts to 35 to 50 mm, with a body length from 30 to 40 mm.
Common at ponds, canals and lakes and surrounding habitat.
One of the earliest damselfly to emmerge, usually in early April. Emergence often begins in April in good seasons and the flight period usually extends until August.
A widespread and common species, often found far from water. One finds it to small waters and slowly flowing brooks. Also moorige pools are preferred. Thereby a close onshore vegetation is important since it sits rarely freely, but always hides itself in the vegetation. This is also the reason, why the early "Large Red Damselfly" is not seen so frequent despite their frequent occurrence and the red colouring.
The "Large Red Damselfly" is found in many habitats, from garden ponds and ditches, to lakes, tarns and acid moorland pools and flushes.
The male and female remain "in tandem" whilst the females descends just below the water surface to lay eggs into aquatic plants.
The larval stage lasts two years.

Very good colours, I liked the compo, it is 'reach' with great colours, very good pose.

Dear Paulo, this is another nice picture of P. nymphula posted in the last days. See the picture of Filipe Caetano (firelord) which also shows the vivid green/red contrast. In your picture the green appears freshly spring-like. The smooth background, although also green, leaves the outline of the fern leafs brilliantly clear. This is (partially) reasoned by the sharpness of the plant and the insect in the foreground.

This is very beautiful picture. I love the colours here, the sharpness is amazing too. The leaf of the fern looks great.
I think the damselfly is a too centered though. I would want to see a little stronger compositon.

Gostoime moito ver fotos novas na tua libreria.
Ista pareceume especialmente interesante, non so pola beleza do insecto, a calidade da fotografia e o bonito fieto a medio abrir mais pola identificación, xa que tenho varias fotos desta misma libelinha en non sabia moi ben que especie era.
Tamen a tehno con todo o corpo vermello, e negro, sin partes verdes e amarelas, que suponho será outra especie. A verdade e que con aprender de fungos xa tenho traballo de mais, asi que prefiro aproveitarme da sabiduria dun experto coma ti :D
Agora que vexo moitos membros novos en TN tanto en Portugal coma en España a ver se organizamos unha comida todos xuntos. Saudos.
