[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
This is a beautiful Nymphalidae, witch scientific name is Melitaea didyma.
Known as "Spotted fritillary" in english. In portuguese doesn't have a common name.

The photo shows a male of this specie.

It belongs to the Nymphalidae Melitaeinae family.
Is not common in Portugal and is an in danger specie.

Wingspan from 34mm to 44mm.
Here, we can see it flying from 200 meters till 1000 meters of altitude, from May to August.

In Portugal we have two generations of this butterfly among the year.

The top side of the male is bright red-orange, with black marks and blacker, more white on the edge-binds. The colouring of the female goes somewhat more into the grey-brown. The female is bigger then the male.

The sample and the colouring are very variable; it gives also a great many geographical subspecies. This specie is the most strongly varying of all European butterflies.

The caterpillars feed on several plants: Plantago, Veronica, Digitalis, Valeriana, Verbascum, Antirrhinum, Linaria and Stachys.

Their pupa is white with several black and orange spots.

Great picture of this butterfly. I see that its the butterfly season in Portugal. In Israel its the end of the season - the hot days of the summer are coming.
