The day before firs snow has fallen. Temperatures dropped from 10C to -8C in several hours. This day the sun was shining but temperature was as low as in the previous day. I decided to make a short trip to the local zoo.

In the zoo there is a paddock for domestic animals having in the middle o small stable made of wood. The loft is full with hay and seems to be a good house for the House sparrow (Passer domesticus). Birds spend time flying from loft to animals feeding place and then in the small fir trees across the alley.

This young bird was sitting in these fir trees and seemed grieved and surprised by the cold weather and freshly fallen snow. He felt secure in the shelter made of snow covered fir perches. Coated in his ruffled feather he did not care about the human pointing the camera towards him.

I made the photo from about two meters with the camera hand held. Due to the deep shadow the bird was sitting in I had to use the flash. Not even flash light changed his position and mood. I left him sitting there in the company of at least a dozen other sparrows.

Hello Cristian,
A very nice composition, Mario. Great POV of the housefinch. Sharp details and good colors. Well done and TFS.
Best regards Siggi

Hello Cristian,
Brosov must be very cold, with -8C. This is clear from your notes and at same time position of the bird. This is great capture for housesparrow on coniferous tree under snow. Great eyes contact, POV and focus. Nicely composed with green branches. Thanks for sharing, well done.

Hi Cristian. We have both posted a Sparrow .I think your looks a little cold but as you say in your good notes they have the loft to keep warm in. You have taken this with natural colours and good detail in the featehrs. well done TFS.

Hello Cristian,
I really like the composition on this one, with the young sparrow framed by the snow-laden pine branches.
The white snow is well exposed.
The details are sharp and the colors on the bird are rich.

felicitari pentru aceasta fotografie minunata de iarna! parca ar fi un cetatean contemporan, necajit, fara slujba, fara casa...!
Numai bine,

Hi Cristian, a lovely posture and great compositon of this beutiful bird you captured here. Details, sharpness anc composition are excellent too.
TFS and cheers,
Bayram

This shot reminds me much of Marios in winter in the Boreal forest where he lives...and yours is very much as good..which makes it super to me...You have caught a beauty here and done it well..in a very natural setting...!!!!
Bob

This is the third Hose Sparrow I's seeing today, Cris -- Ivan's from Spain, Nick's from England and yours from Romania.
Your is very special because it is in the midst of winter and snow. The colours on the bird are very attractive and you have captured it with its wings fluffed up against cold.
Well done and TFS.

Ciao Cristian,

Hello Cristian,
Nice portrait of a puffed-up male House Sparrow in a wintery BG. The lighting is great and the composition with the contrasting dark BG pleasing. All the details are clearly seen, including a ditinct white eyebrow that is more characteristic of the Spanish Sparrow!
TFS this fine winter scene: here it is only -3 deg!
Kind regards,
Ivan

Bonjour Cristian,
Adorable petit moineau tout dodu. La photo a beaucoup d'atmosphère, dûe à la présence de la neige. Le plumage de l'oiseau est très beau et il est montré avec beaucoup de netteté. Belle photo, bien naturelle .
Un grand merci
Anne

Hello Cristian,
Good use of fill flash with warm colors, and I like the classic fluff-ball pose :)
Great POV, detail, and DOF. The bird stands out well from this dark BG also..
Well done,

Hi Cristian!

Your shot is very striking by the level of details! The light resulted by the flash in the light of the bird is amazing. I hope it moved afterwards to avoid freezing!

Great shot.

Buna Cristian

Hi Christian,
Sparrows are one of my favourite birds. They have been one of the most abundant of the birds in urban areas, but they seem to be dwindling in numbers.
This one you present from your visit to the zoo, is a very beautiful specimen caught in its very natural habitat. The colours on the lumage are rich and is well offset by the snow deposits on the branches. The bird itself is in superb clarity and sharpness.Very well done.
TFS & Cheers
Silpa
