Family: Lilliaceae

This is one of the three species of Lillium found wild on romanian teritory. All of them ar showy and spectacular, all of them prefers the mountain and subalpine meadows ecosystem. This one is the more common, the other two being much rare and regional.
It is a tall plant, sometime the stem raising up to 1 m high. It bears 3 to 15 flowers alternate disposed on the stem. The flowers are about 5 cm wide, usualy flesh red, but there are individuals with brownish flowers too. Brown spots make a pattern on the quite thick, succulent petals.
As beautiful as it looks, as nasty it smells: it has a foul odour of rotten flesh that can be sensed from several meters away, with the role of atracting its pollinators: the flies.
In some regions became scarce due to overpicking, therfore local protection laws were issued.

Quite a bit of noise but I rather like it, and the picture works in any case. Complementing colours red/green give it a good punch. Great visual impact!
