[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Hi guys,

This is my last picture before I head of to the south of Romania (Galati County) for a research project on the Floodplains of the Prut River. I hope you enjoy it.
It was taken 2 weeks ago in the city of Iasi (Iasi County, Romania).

The picture is of a Pelophylax kl. esculentus or Rana kl. esculenta (which ever you preffer) - the edible frog.

It is a wide-spread amphibian "species" encountered in most of Europe.

The reason why I named the picture "freek of nature" is that Pelophylax kl. esculentus has a hybrid origin. It is realy a cross between Pelophylax ridibundus (or Rana ridibunda) and Pelophylax lessonae (or Rana lessonae).
Most researchers argue that this frog is still somewhat reproductively limited. So it can be the result of P. lessonae X P. ridibundus, P. lessonae X P. kl. esculentus or P. ridibundus X P. kl. esculentus. But, recent studis have proven (at least they convinced me) that P. kl. esculentus X P. kl. esculentus could still = P. kl. esculentus because one lessonae set of cromosomes from P. kl. esculentus could combine with a set of ridibunda cromosomes from the other P. kl. esculentus and still = P. kl. esculentus :D

That`s why they call these 3 green frog forms the "Pelophylax esculentus COMPLEX", because it`s all so extremely "simple" :))

Oh, and to add to this, some Pelophylax kl. esculentus females cand also reproduce trough parthenogenesis, which means they can clone themselves, without the need for a male.

Best regards,
Alex

Hi Alex,
Really complex cross you've explained us! Perfect capture with an excellent visual contact-:)

The note is fascinating!
And the photo is great. The detail on his back - the rough surface - and the great color make this an excellent photo!

Hi Alex,

A colorfull captur of this frog, colors and details are great, howerver I thin another lower POV would improve the compo,TFS and have a good trip to the south,

Paul

Hello Alex,
Very nice contribution and very good explanatory note. I would add only that the described phenomenon is a specific kind of parthenogenesis and is called "hybridogenesis".
Another thing is that the person that discovered such mating system in Rana esculenta is Polish herpethologist - Leszek Berger.
Here you can find a very interesting paper about the evolutionary history of the edible frog.
Best greetings,
Michal

Salut Alex

Misto poza si frumoasa si interesanta povestioara despre complexul verde al Ranelor.
Imi plac detaliile foarte clare de pe tegumentul broastei si culorile foarte vii si bine saturate.
Interesanta ideea cu pozitionarea numelui :))

Bravo si TFS

Hello Alex!
Great presentation! The photo is really good but as a zoologist I especially like the very informative and interesting note! :)
On the other hand (mainly because it is not use very often) it woudl be nice to add that "kl." = klepton :)
Thanks for showing this interesting presentation and best greetings from Lodz!
Radomir
