Chaffinch {Fringilla coelebs)

The chaffinch is the UK’s second commonest breeding bird, and is arguably the most colourful of the UK's finches. Its patterned plumage helps it to blend in when feeding on the ground and it becomes most obvious when it flies, revealing a flash of white on the wings and white outer tail feathers. It does not feed openly on bird feeders - it prefers to hop about under the bird table or under the hedge. You’ll usually hear chaffinches before you see them, with their loud song and varied calls.

Breeding
Anywhere with trees and bushes, including coniferous and deciduous woodland, farmland hedgerows, parks and rural and suburban gardens.

Wintering
Same as breeding habitat.

Where to see it
Around the UK in woodlands, hedgerows, fields, parks and gardens anywhere.

What does it eat?
Insects and seeds.

What does it sound like?
Fast, descending song phrase; 'pink, pink' calls.

When to see it
All year round.

This beautiful bird showed up while I was resting in the middle of a meadow on our way up to the Bucegi mountain. It lingered around for a few seconds, picked a seed and flew away. I took a few shots to share them with you. Hope you like them. Thanks for your comments/critiques!

Hi Eduard,
This is a good catch of this beautiful bird. I liked your notes about him. I guess this one is in moult (because of the feathers missing on the head). I learned recently that during the breeding season bird moult and the head is the last phase of this transformation. Nice moment, thanks,

Very nice capture of this chaffinch.You caught it very close like a macro shot.Colors,catchlight in eyes,details,POV and composition are wonderful.
