Zootoca vivipara - Common or viviparous lizard

Class: Reptilia
Order: Squamata
Suborder: Sauria (Lacertilia)
Family: Lacertidae
Genus: Zootoca
Species: Z. vivipara

The viviparous lizard is widely distributed in Europe but absent from most parts of Iberia, Italy and Greece. In Romania it is mostly found in montain regions but has been recently discovered living at lower altitudes (the western and eastern plains and the lower regions of the Suceava Platou). It is a species that only lives in areas with a high humidity and not too high temperatures.

Zootoca vivipara is a small lizard species, reaching 18cm in lenght.

It goes into hibernation at the end of september and emerges in february-april.

It feeds on a large variaty of arthropods and worms.

As an adaptation to harsh climates of its environment, most populations are ovoviviparous. The reason probably is that eggs are very hard to incubate at low temperatures. Mating takes place in spring and in june-august 2-12 eggs are layd, from which the babies emerge emidiatly.

The species is not threatened in Romania.

I took this shot in july 2006, in Campulung Moldovenesc (Suceava County, Romania). This particular specimen was a "very" gravid female, it looked like it was about to explode :) I wanted to capture its tired gravid expresion in this shot. I hope I succeded.

Thanks for viewing...

Ciao Alex, bel primo piano di lucertola!
Ottimi dettagli e bei colori, bravo!
Ciao.
Franco

Hi Alex,
Very clear and sharp, nice details. Your DOF has islolated the head and front leg very well, focusing the attention there. Very nice color and light, great POV. Perhaps a tiny bit less space left IMHO.
Very well done.

Misto poza Alex

Detalii bune, culori faine, buna pozitionare a subiectului. Doar o chestie: numele de "common lizard" de regula e folosit in tarile nordice unde cam abunda si unde ii cam greu sa gasesti alte specii. Probabil "viviparous" e termenul mai corect.

Bravo si TFS

Hi Alex,
Great details on this lizard. I like your POV and DOF. The only thing, there is maybe too much space on the left but overall this is a good picture with an interesting composition, TFS,
