Once upon a time... one hot summer, a cricket sang cheerfully on the branch of a tree, while down below, a long line of ants struggled damely under the weight of their load of grains; and between one song and the next, the cricket spoke to the ants:
- Why are you working so hard? Come into the shade, away from the sun, and sing a song with me!
But the tireless ants went on with the work...
- We can't do that - they said - We must store away food for the winter! When the weather`s cold and the ground white with snow, there's nothing to eat, and we'll survive the winter only if the pantry is full.
- There's plenty of summer to come - replied cricket - and lots of time to fill the pantry before winter. I'd rather sing!
And so all summer, the cricket sang while the ants laboured. But the days turned into weeks and the weeks into months. One morning, the cricket woke shivering with cold. The snow fell and he could find nothing
at all to eat. But he was lucky, because he saw a light in the distance, it was house of ants where he found shelter and food..."

I believe that all of you know this fairy story :> But it includes both the falsehood and the true.
From the entomological point of view the falsehood is that most adult orthopteran species do not survive winer as adults, they are dying in early autumn. The true is, that there are really some species of crickets - the ant crickets (Orthoptera: Myrmecophilidae). This family includes only some 100 species, usually very small (2 to 5 mm long), wingless, and flattened insects, resembling small cockroach nymphs. The most important genus is Myrmecophilus which includes most species of this group. They live in ant and termite nests where they feed on secretions of their hosts.

Of course the cricket from this picture does not belong to this ant-loving species :> This is a member of family Tettigonidae - a bush-cricket Tettigonia cantans (Fuessli, 1775) (in Polish: pasikonik spiewajacy), one of 6 species from this genus known from Europe. It has some 20-33mm and was recorded from almost all European countries.

Hello Radomir
where were you my friend. I also wish a Happy New Year in 2009 to you and your family. This is great macro-shot for lazy singer, with superb coloration of green and dark BG. Sharp details, POV and composition also great as like frame and notes. Thanks for sharing, best wishes.
Ahmet

Happy New Year, Radomir!
I like the fable you have narrated in your note -- with some significant alterations, of course. Reminds me of my days in school when we had to memorize this moral story to get a good grade!
The image of your Bush Cricket is very sharp with fine details on its green body.
I like your informative notes that you write on your own and based on your erudition in the subject.
All the best and TFS.
Ram

Czesc Radek, dawno Cie nie bylo! Szczesliwego Nowego Roku!

A beautiful, high definition capture of a fine looking female tettigonid individual Radomir, the colour reproduction here is fantastic, more so against that flattering dark BG. TFS this fine image my friend, "fairy story" and all!.

Hello Radomir,
Nice to read a text inspired by the "Fables" de la Fontaine. Pleasant picture of the Tettigonia cantans, which you caught well on this tree bark... the antennae seemed to be alittle too long :-).
All the best for you too in this beginning new year.

Lovely shot of this Bush Cricket, which we call a Katydid here in New Zealand.
We should be hearing the faint 'Zip' of their song in the evenings soon.
