As I told you in "Rhapsody on blue" not far from my city I found a mixed colony (Merops apiaster, Coracias garrulus, Sturnus vulgaris, Falco tinnunculus and Athene noctua). Thanks to Sibiricus I was corrected and I must to rectify: the owl is Glaucidium passerinum. I was not sure on last two species but yesterday evening my supposition was confirmed.
Till six o'clock afternoon the bee-eater, roller and starling were very active. After six o'clock, slowly, the peaceful spreaded over the area and the pygmy owl
came out discreet, but not enough to rid of to the roller eyes. So the pygmy owl was the target of few attacks of roller pair. When the silence of the evening
covered the colony I saw Falco tinnunculus coming few time to his nest, 50 m far from the colony.
The distance between me and the little owl was around 25m, I used first my Nikon D70+Sigma 170-500m at 500m + telconverter 2x first time with flash Nissin 5000GT at maximum power and second the flash Nikon Speedlight SB-25 at maximum power, without any good result. Besause it was very dark I used my camera at 1.600 ISO, the time 1/160 s! camera supported on the car window. The image was croped, processed (noise reduction), improved with Adobe. You can see the result.

Hi Dan,
It is not Little Owl, it is Pygmy Owl (Glaucidium passerinum).
Regards,
Pentti

sal' Dan,

asta este cucuvea toata ziua.
in primul rand nu are cum sa fie Glaucidium p... din cauza biotopului.

TFS,
cosmln

Hello Dan,
I think you were right: this is the Little Owl (Athene noctua). I have seen and photographed the Pigmy Owl in Sweden and know that the spots on the head are smaller and there is more brown on the sides. This sharp and well composed shot shows the characteristics of the Little Owl well.
TFS and best wishes, Ivan
