[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
A few days ago i went to some of my favorite places for macro shooting mostly too see if anything is still alive. After some rather long searches, i managed to find some interesting subjects to try my new equipment on "home groud" :)

Among other things, i really wanted to see the macro capabilities of my long Sigma lens and also try, for the first time, to shoot with Manual Focus. I have to say i was pretty amazed by how fine it is - the smallest turn and it will blow a small subject right off the focus completely - but in the end i was quite happy with some results.

Almost on our way to the car, i found this little Blue Featherleg Damselfly female (or Platycnemis pennipes if you preferr) and i tried some interesting ideas. Since the sun wasn't shining anymore on this spot, i used the tripod...just in case. After some close-ups, i took a step back and remembered some photos on TN about insects that didn't necessary occupy 60-80% of the fram and still looked amazing, so i thought i'd give it a shot. As you can see, since i'm uploading it, i was happy with the result.

I have another composition for this image but i said that if i'm going to post something really different from what i was used to, i might as well go crazy and put this one as teh "original"; for the other one, please see the workshop.

Hope you'll like it, too :)

Hi Horia,

A nice capture with good sharpness, colors and BG,my preference goes to th composition in the workshop,I shoot all my macro with manual focus and the fine tuning of the focus is a well known issue for me,well done and tfs

Hello Horia, my neighbour!
Interesting to see the image before cropping and to see your sense of composition while taking the shot.
This is IMHO the best feature: the composition against a fine bokeh. The damselfly also shows sharply and well , which you confirm in your WS.
Thanks for this one and have a good week,
Ivan

Hi again Horia

A lovely composition with nice sombre colours and excellent focus. Your note is very interesting too. I like this version best.

I bought the 100mm 2.8 Canon macro lense a few months ago but have not had much luck with it - I usually have my dog with me and she seems to think it is a great joke to come and lick me when I am flat on my stomach!

James

hi horia, great and interesting macro-shot! :-)
not a bad idea to use the 70-300, never thought of that really,
as i like my little 105mm (and all manually focused),
but anyway, the well composed capture turned out very good - btw. i like the version in the WS better.
well done & best wishes, thor.

Hello Horia,
This is a very beautiful composition showing the plant and damselfly against a lovely background and with plenty of space. I think this one is the most interesting shot while I like the workshop capture too with closer focus on the beautiful damselfly. It's hard to choose!
TFS and best wishes, Ulla

Hi Horia.
Very nice note and pleasant learning the new equipment. I am sure you grow fond of this lens. I like both crops. Every of then has own charm. I also like excellent DOF, great sharpness of the insect and plant and impressive smooth BG. My best wishes and TFS.

A beautiful clear picture of the insect. And just shot in the right moment.
Best wishes,
Achim

Hola Horia,
Me gusta la composición, me parece bonita y original, excelente exposición y nitidez, no todo va a ser acercamiento :). Saludos

Hello Horia,
So, farewell to dragonflies. Will have to wait until spring to see them again. Anyway, it's a very nice minimalistic, low-key composition. Nicely blurred background. I like this lens too. I have the non-APO version but the difference (according to what I read) is minimal.
Best greetings & TFS,
Michal

bonjour horia
au debut je me demandais pourquoi vous aviez posté un image aussi lointaine de cette demoiselle, apres avoir traduit la note je comprends mieux et je trouve egalement interressant de voir quelque chose de different.bien osé.

Hello Horia,
My personal favorite is the original, Great focus and exposure but for me the composition is the winner, sometimes less is more.
Rick

Hello Horia,
A lovely composition, where the shape of the insect works well with the shape of the plant!
Fine details in the main actor; a pleasant composition with a subject enhancing background colour!
Greetings,
Pablo -
