Something simple and common CAN make a decent shot...at least that's the conclusion i've reached after seeing "a few" photos :)

This is a reed head (obviously), shot a few weeks ago on a nice morning outing. I really like the effect of the backlight and the contrast with the dark (but not black) BG it had. Although it was well in reach, i preferred a shot from the distance, to try and take advantage of the bokeh provided by my big zoom lens at 300mm.

Something you might want to know:
The Common Reed is a very important plant for wildlife and conservation, particularly in Europe and Asia, where several species of birds are strongly tied to large Phragmites stands, notably:
- Bearded Tit - Panurus biarmicus
- Reed Warbler - Acrocephalus scirpaceus
- Great Bittern - Botaurus stellaris
(from Wikipedia)

Hope you'll like it :)

Hi Horia,
You are right, anything makes a decent shot.
But yours is a very good shot.
I like particularly the light.
Greetings
Raimundo

Hello Horia nice light giving good contrast and sharp detail. Nicely offset for a fine composition hope to find some of those birds you mention :-) tfs rgds Necip

Hi Horia

Just because something is common does not mean it is not beautiful. Every morning I walk my dog along the dyke which is fringed with reeds, they look especially beautiful at this time of year, whilst in spring and summer they are full of warblers and buntings (there is also a heron - called Fred - who is there all the time). I also love back light and you have used it most effectively here, whilst maintaining excellent detail in the reed head. The BG is also really good.

James

Hi Horia,
A very ellegant photo. The details in the seed head is wonderful. The backlight illuminated the seed head pefectly and gave that wonderful silver look on the soft edges of each seed. The greyish BG helps to bring out the details even better, and makes the composition nice and clean.

Niek

I have tried time and time again to get a BG as good as this behind a back-lit reed! Honestly, I'm not just saying it to make conversation! :-D
Excellent capture!
Stark contrast between reed and BG.
Sharp and very detailed.
Beautiful lighting.
Very artistic.
Well done Horia!
Cheers mate,
Joe

Horia;
Some pictures are made just for this kind of lighting. I have added it to my appropriate theme..I think I remember leaving it as a group theme...anyhoo...a super job of working under those conditions and coming up with this winner.

Hello Horia,

Hi Horia.
I like your idea. It is so creative and result is so poetic. Shot is composed perfectly and is looked very nice. You managed to show sunlight effect and beauty of the common reed with great skill. Wonderful exposure, prefect reproduction of the widest range of light tones. Sharpness and details are perfect. True work of our nice lens. Well artistically done, my friend. My best wishes and compliments.
Alexei.

Hello Horia,
If a Phragmites reed seeding head is to be portrayed in an attractive way, this is an excellent result. I like your use of the winter light to make the phragmites shine against the dark winter BG and the composition is simple but couldn't be better.
A fine image that makes me look forward to what our local reed-beds can provide!
Thanks for sharing this bit of artistry,
Ivan

Hello Horia,

Hi Horia,
Very elegant photo... Backlighting, color tones, POV and composition are beautiful. TFS
Best wishes,

Hi Horia,
Simple and effective composition, the backlit effect works very well here against the dark BG..
And it's true, the simple things around us can make a very "decent" image..At least that's my conclusion as well :)

Hello my friend!
what have we here?? Art by the looks of it! Wonderful work on a subject that looks easy, but is so often hard to do in my experience! I took a few close crop shots with my Bigma on Saturday whilst out shooting birds, but nothing compsred to this...truly beautiful, the backlight works so well and of course, the composition is perfect..great work :o)

Hi Horia!

Simplicity, beauty, elegance, abstraction of light and shadow: some characteristics that touch me in your delicate picture. It's artistic, just the plant and the light, and this is sufficient to make a pleasant picture.

Maybe you should rather say: especially simple and common things are ideal subjects for good pictures. And it would then become difficult to define what simple and common things are and what not...

Kind regards

Markus
