And so it begins :o)

This is my first animal shot of this year and i hope many more interesting ones will come, too.
Ok...ok...i may have cheated a bit...it's one of the frogs from the thermal pond from near my hometown so actually this population doesn't hibernate...what i mean is that i could have taken a photo of even on January 1st in freezing temperatures outside, since the water here never drops under about 20 Celsius.

Still, taking advantage of a beautiful sunny day (and a day off of my brother’s :o)) i just went to see what's happening at one of my favorite shooting places.
Well...actually, aside from frogs and some mallards...nothing :( No insect activity yet, no reptiles...it's obvious too early for them. However, i have high hopes for about two weeks from now, if weather keeps warm.

Anyway...the "hunt" is one ;o)

What you see here is of course a Rana ridibunda - a typical inhibitor of the pools there. A bit different than the regular colors you might find on your ridibundas everywhere because if the rich vegetation around this thermal pond.

Tech-talk: I know this not a good shot...i was just a little enthusiastic about shooting animals again :)
I tried to use a very shallow DOF for the frog and bring it out better, but i still have to get the grips of this bigger lens of mine. I have the smaller one (17-70mm) pretty well figured out, but this one still needs a lot more practice...but i'll get there :o)

Hope you'll like it :o)

Hello Horia

This is a very nice shot with good sharpness and fine details, the DOF is also good, the big eyes of this edible frog is in focus. I hope the first marking of the first photo of 2008 would be nice for you:)
TFS friend,

Bayram

Hello Horia,
Well, any sign of life cheers one up this time of year and this golden frog is so beautiful! Great focus on it as it is floating on the water and sharp details. Nice to see the blue sky reflected in the water too! Well done and I wish you good "hunting"!
TFS and best wishes, Ulla

Hi Horia,
I think you manage good with you long zoom but it's almost always good to go down one step for better sharpness.
But this picture is sharp with fine details and the shallow DOF works nicely here. Nice low POV and a good composition.
Well done, my friend.

Hello Horia,
Congratulations on your first shot of the season! This is a nice start being able to make a sharp capture of the European Marsh Frog in good lighting with fine eye-contact!
Using ISO 200 is still difficult in Sweden but the days are getting longer.
Thanks for sharing this one my friend,
Ivan

Horia!
Congratulations on getting your first animal shot of the year!!
This is a splendid shot of this frog!
I love how it is partially submerged.
Superb composition and POV.
Nice lighting.
I'm guessing this pond is warm from volcanic activity?
Thanks for sharing this my friend.
Good to see the animals are appearing again :-)
Cheers mate,

Joe

Hi Horia,
first of many i hope! Really like the eye contact you got here, he seems to be well aware of your presence. I would also love to see a landscape shot of this thermal pond you talk of..i am intrigued!
Thanks for sharing this my friend.
Paul

Hello Horai
What a lovely capture of frog. I hope all shots will be very nice as much as this first of 2008 at least. Nicely composed and framed. Focus, composition and colors very nice. good notes and work. TFS, well done friend
Ahmet

Salut Horia,

Frumoasa incadrare iar culorile sunt exact asa cum trebuie, reale. Imi place zona focalizata, incadrata de cele doua zone "out of focus", dau o profunzime excelenta imaginii.Bravo.

Numai bine, Cezar T.

Amphibian is as good as an animal:-) And for your first it is a nice keeper. Clearly showing his talents of surviving in two climates of H20 and land...Nicely coloured and centered...and some humorous notes as well..
Bob

Hi Horia,
For a brief moments I was lost in time with the title of your picture...wondering in which month we were...
So I'm glad your animal's season is now officially open :-D
I know what are you talking to with respect of the lens...but I always took Alexei like an example of the things that can be achieved when used properly.
I like the composition proposed here and the light on the frog, it works pretty well with all that floating plants around.
Your aesthetic sense is always present!
This is one of the reasons I like so much this site, to be able to live the whole four seasons through all the members photos here, and it seems now its time for the spring.
Congratulations and thanks for this new fresh post.
My best regards,
JM

Nice capture with a very good POV and composition. While it's a bit soft you managed to make it interesting nevertheless. Good job! Cheers, Klaus

Sencilla y atractiva toma Horia. Naturalidad y realismo en los colores.
Saludos: J. Ignasi

Hello Horia
You nearly had me up my local pond there!!..but its frozen solid!!
This is a fine Rana ridibunda..but for my benefit I shall call it it a frog!..I have so much to learn!!
As for your tech..I dont see to much wrong really...Perhaps you were a bit to far away at the limit of 300mm..and maybe a 6.3 on the aperture..But thats easy for me to say from here.
i think its a great picture and I look forward to the coming months...I have had midges hatching from my back garden last week when it was unusually warm..we hit 15 celcius in the shade!!
Paul

Hello Horia,

a pleasing photo to share
many thanks

Youpi, a frog, my first frog of the year too! Your picture is better than you say, I like it. It's not an award winning picture but it is technically excellent and the green frog on the blue water is really nice. Plus, those herbs floating around it smell like a pond, the wind is soft to the cheeks and the water is so soft. Really, Horia, your picture conveys a summery feeling and I can feel it on my skin...euh, my heart! Thanks for the nice moment,

Francine

Hello Horia,
A beautiful colour palette in the pale winter light!
This little fellow seems a bit lazy yet, maybe the water still is too cold for him, hehehe...
A pleasant composition with good details!
Greetings,
Pablo -

Hi Horia

What a great shot! The POV is amazing (you must have been laying down..or swimming!) the dark blue water sets him off beautifully. The focus and exposure are both perfect. One of many great wildlife shots to come in 2008

Hi Horia, the thing I like about this shot, other than the fact that it's a frog shot "out of season" is that second eye looking at me from out of the water. With this reflection you could almost (but not quite) flip this shot upside down. I know, I tried. Colour is maybe a little more "olive" than I would have expected, but I guess a good rich diet in a nice warm pool could do that to you. I'll be looking forward to more of these guys as the weather warms up.

Thanks, John

Hi Horia, splendid capture of lovely frog, excellent sharpness and fine details, I like a lot, bravo, ciao Silvio

Hi Horia.
You rather modest. I like shot a lot and your and lens work. DOF is very good. I like sharp surroundings at such subjects. It is so impressive and sharp image of the scenery is looked better for may taste. I like wonderful colours and exposure of the image and reproduction of transparency of the water. Well done and go on.
Yours Alexei.

Well done, Horia.
One should not expect that thermal ponds and archives have so much in common; you can always go back there when there's nothing to shoot. Hope spring will bring you a lot of opportunities, Horia.
Furthermore I like your image. It is neat, well composed, very nice colours...
Well done
TFS
Annick

Great picture as usual Horia! Always a pleasure to see one of your shots! TFS and regards!

Hello Horia!
Yes, frogs = spring! And this time I am very happy to inform you that also in Lodz the frogs just strarted to be active! :)

According to your picture I have to say, that I like a lot low POV (almost frog's point of view ;>). Good sharpness, details and colouration. I like also reflections (especially "eye" effect ;>).
You are right that there are some pictures of this species on TN, but it is always line to see the "first one" in the year!
All the best from Lodz and see you probably after 20th April!
Radek

PS. I just noted that photo was taken in 1st Mai! It is really funny, I though that you have only Doi Mai in Romania :) So maybe you have also... 3rd? 4th? ;)
