Remember many said that these delicate damselflies are voracious predators? Well here is some proof :)

You might have seen some pictures of other members too with a damselfly and its prey, but maybe you wondered how or with what do they catch it? Here is an in-sight of their impressive jaws. Hope you'll like it.

As for the species - it's again a common one in my gallery - Calopteryx splendens, the Banded Demoiselle, a female.

A fascinating look at the face. First today I saw a baby one of these for the first time. Now I see why they are such predators. It never occurred to me that they need some clamping power. This would be it then. I'm glad they are not a couple sizes bigger...wow! A super duper capture.

Hi Horia,
thank god they're only small huh?! Very impressive looking set of jaws here! I love this double presentation of the 'before and after' pose. Excellent POV to portray your subject like this, with some great lighting and beautiful colour. Very well done as ever.

Hello Horia,
a nice demonstration of the damselfly's mouthparts. Just very suitable and valuable for TN. Besides this the pictures are very sharp. Colours and light are perfect.
Best wishes, Peter

B****y hell!!!
Man am I happy that they're only a few centimetres long!!!
I love your idea of showing a clamped jaw and an open one... it's like a non-moving film... if you get what I mean.
Superb POV showing this scary little critter very clearly.
Great composition aswell.
Sharp with excellent clarity.
Great stuff Horia.
Well done,
Joe

Hello Horia,
Very smart illustration of the jaws of a dragonfly. I can't recall having seen a shot like this before! When they carry a prey you can't see the details clearly. Excellent sharpness and fine colours. Very well done!

Ciao Horia,

magnifique close up.

Hi Horia,
Pretty scary!
Your close crop of the image really focus the attention on that impressive jaws, something good only to be viewed in a macro picture.
The sharpness, lighting and clear details are remarkable.
My compliments and thanks for share it.
Best regards,
JM

Good Evening Horia
I have studied your post today and its one of those rare images where any suggestions on how to improve it would be pointless...You Have achieved exactly what you set out to do and presented it in a manner that would make it fit for any reference book..The damselfly is of great interest to me as I do a little trout fishing and try to imitate it in fly tying throughout its various stages of life and this is an image that I have never seen before despite having many books on the subject.
Thank you for enlightening me Horia
Cheers for this
Paul

Hi Horia,

This time, you brought here very beautiful metallic damselfly!
Very nice close-up shot, with excellent details and perfect focusing.
As my experience, I think these species is very shy and they don't let me closer.
Well captured with excellent pose and lovely colours.

Hi Horia.
I will be honest. I have missed this shot but it cannot be of long duration. I often visit your pages.

Terrific illustration of special features of the damselfly. Refined work. Amazing POV and details. All other components of photo skill are perfect too. I mean, firs of all, DOF, beautifulness of the BG, wonderful lights and colours. Superb job.
Alexei.

P.S. Thanks a lot for kindness, expressed by you in last your comments. I remember our discussion and will be remember always as an example of constructive and pleasant way to knowledge.

Great content, Horia.
Good you can compare.
Scary Banded Demoiselle...
Well done

Hello Horia,
I missed this fine study of the jaw movements of a Demoiselle. This double shot shows the jaws both in retracted and extended positions in fine sharpness and detail to show the front half of the demoiselle in excellent sharpness. This is quite unique on TN and makes a valuable educational contribution.
Well done and thanks for sharing this.

Thanks also for your kind comments on my 300th! I might also add that it takes people like you to make this site so inspiring. We all inspire each other, which is why TN is so marvellous.
Many thanks, Horia,
Best wishes, Ivan

Hi Horia!
I was absent here last few weeks so it is time to write omething about overlooked photos! :)
Yes, this is really danger creature! Even if for the first view it looks like very delicate insect. Its "jaws" are impressive and can cut every small creature... :)
I like a lot the way you presented "jaws" - the first photo with closed, and the second with opened :)
Details and DOF are very good, also colours are great. MOreover, you kept in both pictures a very good eye-contact with damselfly :)
Best greetings from Lodz!
Radek

Hi Horia,
I've never knew that the jaws from a damselfky is this big. But considering the fact that they are meat eaters is must be obvious.
I am very impressed that you were able to get this close and also were able to get two super sharp photos with just a minor difference. The details in the head are wonderful, and I really like the overall green composition where the metalic green of the damselfly stand out perfectly.
TFS,
Niek
