Hi everyone

This is the first shot i'm uploading from "away". I'm at my girlfriend's place and i'm doing this from her laptop...so i hope this turns out alright :)

This looks like a pair of Black-tailed Skimmers - Orthetrum cancellatum - thanks Joe for the heads-up and to Greg for the confirmation :)
I took this shot back in may and although i've taken lots of other dragonfly/damselfly photos since, i quite likes this one and wanted to share it with you.

Species Info:
Known as "blue arrows", the males of this active species sheering fast and low above the water or perching on open ground beside it, are one of the most populatar dragonfly sights in our area (Europe).

Found throughout Europe, except northern Scandinavia, extending to Kashmir and Mongolia.
It's one ofthe most common species.

Habitat: larger standing or slow-flowing waters, generally open and ofeter with unvegetated margins such as lakes, sand pits, rivers and canals.

Flight season: from the end of April to the beginning of September; most abundant from June to August.

Hope you'll like it.

Hi Horia!

It's alright, even more than this... although from my point of view the picture has not the usual sharpness. It is still sharp enough to be beautiful and pleasant, it's your style, but I think we are used to be a bit spoiled by your usual quality! This does not change anything to the fact that it is an incredible picture: see and capture such a position, take advantage of this possibility, means to be a great photographer!

Kind regards

Markus

Hi Horia!

I agree with Joe - for me it looks like Black-tailed skimmer. O.albistylum has got more black colours on end of abdomen.
Very good action picture. Both insects are sharp and colorfull, pose is really acrobatic :-) I like BG very much with dark green/black blurred spots. As always very interesting post my friend!

By the way - of course I know Rammstein's version which is even better then original :-)

Hello Horia,
Whenever I have tried to capture a pair of copulating Black-tailed skimmers they have been on the ground, which led to an uninteresting image with a busy BG. Here you have caught them in a fine hanging pose against a pleasing contrasting green OOF bg in excellent lighting and from a fine POV.
This is what makes this a fine image IMHO and I thank you for sharing it.
I hope you can persuade your girl-friend to take up nature photography and if so, join TN!
Best wishes,
Ivan

Hi, dear Horia.
Pictured subject is amazing in every aspect. I like pleasant curve of stem, impressive poses of the dragonflies, terrific BG, its smooth light spots and impressive dark areas, excellent exposure and perfect details. May be level of sharpness is not ultimate> however, it is very good.. I like your crisp sharp images a lot and I like sharpness at whole. Comparing work of this Sigma lens on Minolta and Sony on the one side and on other cameras on the other side I think inbuilt stabilization is great deal. Sigma at the long end in macro mode demands good stabilization or tripod. That is why I suppose your sigma 17-70 produces sharper a bit images of such scenes. My kind regards and TFS.
Alexei.
