Hi again friends

As Greg already mentioned in his post today, we are having a very friendly competition that would benefit TN most of all i think: which of us two will send more different species of d-flies on TN this year. As stated, the competition will be over with end of 2008.

I also checked my previous posts from this year and counted that I posted 14 different species of d-flies till now (photos taken in Romania - i'm not counting the Libellula quadrimaculata from the US). Today's species is the 15th.

This is a Onychogomphus forcipatus or Small Pincertail - a rather rare species on TN - just as Greg's species from today :)
I also have another post of this species from last year and you can find some interesting details about it (and its tail more specifically) there.

This shot i took a few days ago, on one of my trips to some mountains in the area.

This is my list of d-flies posted this year:

Aeshna cyanea - Southern hawker
Lestes barbarus - Migrant spreadwing
Calopteryx virgo - Beautiful demoiselle
Orthetrum cancellatum - Black-tailed skimmers
Brachytron pratense - Hairy hawker
Platycnemis pennipes - White-legged damselfly
Libellula fulva - Scarce chaser
Orthetrum albistylum - White-tailed skimmer
Ischnura elegans - Blue-tailed damselfly
Pyrrhosoma nymphula - Large Red damselfly
Aeshna isoceles - Green-eyed hawker
Coenagrion ornatum - Ornate bluet
Sympecma fusca - Common Winter damsel
Gomphus vulgatissimus - Common clubtail

As i looked at this list, i saw that only 3 species are found on Greg's list so i would call that a very "decent" contribution of species from the two of us here on TN :)

There is one thing i would like to mention though: not all the photos mentioned here are taken this year. They are all posted this year, but i can assure you i have fresh photos of each of those species taken in 2008, too (you will see them sooner or later). Greg, let me know if that still count :)

Anyway, hope you'll like it and hope you like our little friendly competition :) Thanks for looking.

...all of what you said and add that teh image is as fine a challenge as any. Perhaps if I just spent a whole day trying to do this..I would have to quit early from lack of patience...Very nice Horia...I enjoy Greg's sense of humor as well.

Hello Horia,
Oh a competition..Poland vs Romania:-)
Image is certainly 'different' as it is well done overall.
Well applied depth of field. Good in height concerning point of view. Saturated colors.
Good work!

Hallo Horia
To me this is a fantastic image with great clarity, which shows areas of your expertise as photographer. The focus and sharpness is super. You have presented us with an image jam packed with wonderful and clear details to appreciate. I love the way your subject fills almost the entire frame. It just brings out the details so much clearer and closer. I think the challenge between you and Greg is great and done in true Trek Nature spirit. Now we have our own Olympics on the site, and l cannot wait for the next contribution from either of you. Kind regards and thanks for sharing.

Hello Horia!

Fair or not, I think it'll be good fun for both of us and for rest for 'viewers' and fans :-) As I wrote before, I'll send photos mostly from Botanic Garden. This is really good news that so many different species live in such small area in big city. As you wrote TN also will benefit from our olympic fight :-) I think this site needs more such initiatives.

Back to your photo - great start my friend. This specie is for sure unique and rare on TN. Its name is very easy to explain :-) I've never seen this dragonfly before, only on photos. Lovely POV, insect looks great from this side. Perfect colours, detalis and blurred BG. As often in pictures of dragonflies composition is superb. These insects are very polite models and like to sit in very suitable for photographer places :-)

Last but not least - it is very good thing that we both have got similiar gear! So no handicap in cam and lens. Looks like we started here free advertising company for Sigma 70-300 lens :-)

Good luck and waiting for next!

Good shot Horia, I like it!

Hi Horia

Good POV and OOF background. Good sharpness too. Those claspers are mean looking.

Hello Horia,
A superb capture, not just technically, but of a species that is never easy to come across even though it is widespread in Europe.
You caught this O. forcipatus from a great side POV, the fine sharpness making it contrast well against the natural bokeh BG.
The only time I saw it in Sweden was when I was withou my camera!
TFS this beauty and for your kind words on my second anniversary on TN.
Best wishes, Ivan

Hello Horia,
Very fine picture of this rather rare dragonfly. Subtle colours and elegant composition. One species of Pincertails even disappeaed in Switzerland in the last years.
Bonne soirée

Hi Horia

This is so good to see the sporty competition between you and Red Greg. You are so right in saying that TrekNature will be the winner. Good luck to the both of you and happy hunting. I must say it is an impressive list you already have behind your name. Maybe next time you can include Greg's list and then we can keep track of the progress for you both.

A lovely shot of the Small Pincertail with excellent sharp details, a great complimentary BG, wonderful composition and a well managed exposure.

Well done and TFS.
Regards
Loot
