...Alive and kicking i should say :))

Hi friends,

I have great news: the d-flies are still alive and flying around nicely. I honestly thought that after the very cold and wet week(s) that we had, they'd be gone and we would only see them next year.
Still, i wanted to be 100% and with a tiny shred of hope left, i went to one of my preferred habitats this morning and had a look. It was sunny and rather warm actually, but at first look, only some birds and frogs were out. However, much to my surprised, once it got even warmer, they started flying and hovering all around me. I'm telling you, i was able to find no less than 6 species of d-flies :D today...MUCH more than i would have hoped for.

So friends, the most important thing i can inform you with in this note is: GO OUT! Look for them...it's not over yet! :)

This is one of my captures from today. I took many shots of this species but only resting on a reed. Some were flying around me but they would never hover long enough for a good in-flight. So as i was preparing to wrap up, i was changing my camera's setting to "my normal mode" (which includes ISO 100) i saw this beautiful male approaching me and do exactly what i was looking for :) Initially he was too close (if you can imagine) and my first 3 shots only include part of his wings. Then, i zoomed out and got 3 more shots with the entire dragonfly.

By the way, this is shot number 22 in the Odonata Olympics. The species is Aeshna mixta - the Migrant Hawker.

Sorry because I couldn’t return all your nice critiques; I was away until yesterday taking some exams, but I can safely say now that I’m a PhD student :) I will get back to your shots slowly but surely, as well as update my intro :) Thanks for understanding

Thanks for visiting and i hope you'll like it :)

And also nice to see No.22, especially that picture was taken today!!! It is nice to know that dragonflies are stil active (at least - in some regions ;>). Very good shot of flying Aeshna.

Hi Horia!

I hope you don't mind if I don't go out to chase damsel- and dragonflies. I believe it's better if I let the specialists like you do this: the result - as this picture proves it - is much better and those damned little beasts have the disagreeable habit to fly away when I arrive... in opposite of the rocks of Flysch that patiently wait for me to come!

:-)

Kind regards

Markus

Hello my friend, how did the exams go? Good i hope! I too saw some of these creatures this weekend when i visited an island in Poole Harbour, looking for Red Squirrels. Seems summers ain't over just yet.
As always, i am in total awe of anyone who can catch one of these insects mid flight as well as this...amazing camera work and skills, i love the colours too.

Hello Horia, beautiful shot and an excellent shot. Wonderful clarity. Ganesh

Salut

Hi Horia,
Now I am really impressed. You've caught one inflight!! And...even with great details and a perfect DOF. I love the blurred wings caused by the high speed movement of them. I like how the blue spots on the d-fly has become so vibrant from the color contrast whit the yellow OOF reet.
This surely is food for a masterclass in capturing flying insects.
TFS,
Niek

P.S. congrats on becomming a PhD student. It shows even more dedication to what you love most.

Hello Horia,

Excellent in-flight shot of this dragonfly. Excellent sharpness. Great light and colours. Yes, they were still alive here the last week-end. But with this cold week to come, I am very pessimistic.
Congratulations for beginning PhD studies. You do it in a very nice field.
Cheers,
Mariki

Hello Horia,
I'm glad you found some dragonflies! I'm afraid we have looked and there was only the odd one flying here the other day while now its raining so I expect they'll be totally gone within a week.
You got a lovely in-flight capture of A. mixta in flight. Details are very sharp and the colours beautiful.
TFS and cheers, Ulla

A very nice inflight. I loved the colors in the background. Composition and your POV are very good. TFS
Best wishes,

Excellent image, great quality Horia. You nailed it :)
I tried this for several hours a couple of weeks ago. I have dragonflies here at my pond. One day there were a dozen or more twelve-spotted in a mating frenzy..But they gave me fits. It was maddening.
In one particular instance a mating couple did hover for 5-6 seconds right in front of me..but just inside the AF range of my 300mm. I was ready to sell my camera..just kidding ;}}

Hi Horia.
I had issue with uploading of your last landscape picture. However, I have missed so many nice pictured, shared by you that I have many opportunities to say you Bravo. Great at every respect picture. Brilliant timing, amazing colours, ultimate details, great subject at whole. My congratulations and best wishes.
Alexei.

Hello Horia!
How nice to meet you again, MF.
Answering to your comment, I must say that our house is still not finished, we had a lot of difficulties in this past year, so our time was very limited. Anyway we moved 3 months ago and we are very happy now :)
About using the 350D+60mm macro in my photo, and about the OOF eye, you are right, but our equipment is still resting in the bag, and I only took out my old sony to make a fast shot of this beast and look for an ident. Anyway today is my first day on internet from my new house, and I could not avoid posting something in my missed TN :)
I have an "incredibly fast" 54kbps radio internet conection, but that is the handicap of living in a remote place :)))) almost one minute to look a sigle photo...
I am atonished of how you could get this photo with the slow sigma, as you know we also have that lens and I know how difficult is to get this kind of shot with this it, congratulations!
Details, colours, composition, everything is on the spot, and with such a BG!
Also surprised with the species collection you have from only one year, again my compliments.
I hope we will be able to meet more often from now on.
Receive big greetings from you friend,
Felipe.

Hi Horia!

Well, well, well :-) Great return to our competition. Dragonflies in flight always look amazing but this one is really superb. Perfect sharpness, green stripes of reeds on BG, colours of insects - all made great comoposition. After this year of hunting for d-flies I think this specie is my favourite. Excellent job my friend!
