Here is something you don't see everyday.

I went on a short outing a few days ago and among other things i found a nice, large female Praying Mantis on a try thistle probably waiting for a meal. I took some nice shots of her and went on my way for more macros.
When i came back on the same road, i passed by the mantis but noticed it had something red on it. When i looked closer, i saw that she was feasting on a Ruddy Darter. I thought "Uuu...how cool!" and prepared my tripod and gear. But not long after that, i noticed another head popping out from behind the female: a nice little male found an opportunity and had a go :)

For me, as a biologist, this is a very nice find that just goes to show the logic some small animals have - the male knew that while eating a big meal, the female will be busy and it would cause him no harm during and maybe even after mating. Now that's very good for a "brain" the size of a needle head :)

Hope you'll like it and thanks for visiting.
For more shots, feel free to check my website.

Hello Horia,
A very fine picture, illuminated by a wonderful light. It seems so quiet and if we look closer, it isn't so peaceful anymore.. Most beautiful composition with subtle colors and very interesting subject. Btavo!

Hello Horia,
A great capture of these two Praying Mantisses with a very suitable title! I can't fault this because to me every photographic aspect is top class! The male has chosen the right moment so that he is less likely to be eaten!
I took a shot of a pair of Robberflies enjoying the same double pleasure. It does not look as impressive as this but I might post it one day.
Thanks and have a good week,
Ivan

Hello Horia,
This is really a spectacular scene. And the photo is so beautiful. The light and colours are amazing. Excellent sharp details complete it all. Fantastic composition, POV and OOF BG.
Regards,
Peter

Horia,
O poza de "nunta" de exceptie. Imi doresc enorm o asemenea captura, cu mentiunea ca " doamna" este cam indiferenta de ce i se intampla, mancand aperitivul in timp de domnul munceste, el urmand sa fie, banuiesc, desertul.
Sincere felicitari!

Hi Horia. I have never seen one in the wild may be one day. You were able to get a first class macro of this one . With the end of its meal just showing. Sharp focusing and detail. With such natural colours. Stands out well from the plain BG. well done TFS.

Hello Horia,
What a fantastic shot! Colors, sharpness are perfect. But must of all, the situation is really exceptionnal. Do you think the mantis male is able to give the Ruddy Darter as a gift in exchange of a "safe" mating? Anyway, it is a very good observation. Cheers,
Catherine

Really nice macro, Horia. Great title, very naughty! I'm not so sure that male is safe. Are you sure she's going to be satisfied with that dragonfly???

TFS

Nancy

Thanks for sharing

This is a great capture! Its hard to find one praying mantis let alone two and then to have exhibiting such rarely seen behavior. Kudos for the shot!

What amazes me is that not only did you come across a rare opportunity but you didn't mess it up! (I probably would have.) You obviously were ready for it. The image is perfect. great work...again.

Can't ask for more !!! Wish the antennae was not cropped on the left , though.

Hello Horia,
nice title to an excellent image, perfectly observed, aimed at, lighted, focussed, composed, and coming with well written and clever notes.
It makes me remember that many years ago I found a pair of mantis in copulation, the female bent back and embracing the male's thorax, slowly decapitating it and eating it up proceeding with thorax and arms while the male's trunk went on with copulation seemingly unimpressed, even performing well controlled motions of embracing the female with its remaining four legs and keeping its abdomen in perfect balance. A shocking sight to me that I can't forget.
The scene that you are presenting looks much more agreeable to male human minds with the male mantis coming off in a much better way, apparently having evolved to a state of increased cleverness. Impressing image. Double pleasure, indeed!
Thank you! With best regards,
Peter
