Here is another macro shot taken with my new long lens, but a butterfly this time, a subject that i haven't posted in a long time.

I looked at some websites for the ID on this one but no luck. Then i remembered we have our own butterfly expert here on TN, so given the rather similar habitats we both tave, i looked throught his gallery to see if i find anything looking like this by any chance. Luckly enough, i found one, so i think this might be the same same species: Lycaena tityrus - a male Sooty Copper.

So, in case you haven't figured out for your slef, this is a dedication to Peter Stoeckl, a member here whom i admire a lot.

Tech talk:
These photos were some of my very first time i tried to take macros with the new lens.
I know i used an f-stop smaller than i should have, but i was more concentrated on getting a good exposure here, using the AV mode. I also found out here that if you're using a combination of a flash in broad day light and a small f-stop in this Av mode, your photos will always be very overexposed. No idea why...

Anyway, i hope you'll like it and have a nice weekend :)

beautiful and elegant, artistically composed portrait of the Soothy Copper. Wonderful smooth colours in front of a very pleasant uniformly coloured background. A pleasure to see this butterfly as seen by you my friend whom I admire a lot. And an honour to read your very friendly dedication.
All the best and good luck with your new equipment.
Have a nice weekend to come, too!

hello Horia,
Pleasant to see a butterfly picture from you again. And it is a beautiful composition, showing the small Blue which Peter Stoeckl has shown a few days ago. Very fine and harmonious colours, an artistic shot. Well seen, well done

Hi Horia,
that's a wonderful golden one - these tiny ones are so pretty. Also a nice pose.
I always wonder why they all have striped antennas and nobody can tell me! Would be a good idea to present a close shot with this question here on TN!
Thanks and bye

Salut Horia,

N-as putea s-o imbunatatsc foarte mult.

Eddie

Hi Horia, splendid lycaena with great details, excellend composition with lovely flower and great blurry BG, very well done, ciao Silvio

Hello Horia,

Delightful shot of this Sooty Copper I really like the splash of colour from the flowers. The composition works well with the butterfly having some room to fly into. I don't think you used an Fstop smaller than you should have, I think you could have gone smaller to F16 for such a small butterfly, maybe gone to ISO400 and kept your 1/200 shutter speed in the process. Anyway, without all that it's a nice shot, very well done.

Hello Horia,
Superb, spacy, composition. Has some touch of haiku :-) Of course there are few technical flaws, that Alex alreay wrote about - but there are mistakes we all learn based on.
Best greetings & TFS!
Michal

Hi Horia,
WOW! Great job with the new lens. An outstanding macro on this Sooty Copper. Soft light and a spot on exposure. The colors and detail are excellent. Beautiful OOF backround. The long lens controled the DOF well.

Hello Horia

Just marking the post for now

Rob

Hi, dear Horia.
I feel mixed feelings. To adapt to DSLR camera after compact camera is not easy task. What can I see? Great composition, lovely colours, amazing subject. All of these is Horia, which I know very well. What can I see else? Too harsh contour of butterfly (passage from butterfly image to BG), unreal smooth BG, not the best reproduction of the beautiful plant and its flowers (no clear enough colours, some lost details, blurred a bit shapes). Why? I don’t know. Exposure parameters are selected very well. Tripod is used. Flash work is excellent. What about overpostprocessing? In any case, it is necessary to experiment. Try various aperture values, exposure parameters, focus length (you should learn features of the lens and camera), flash on and flash off at the same subject. And post these pictures. Remember and apply theory of experiments :-))). My best wishes and TFS.
Alexei.

Hello Horia,
Beautiful species well captured with your great camera work and fine composition, thanks for sharing Horia.

There is truly a fall flavor to this shot. Not sure what it is..Perhaps the eerie background yet the butterfly and flora remain well colored. A mood shot of an insect. How delightful!

Hi Horia

You are really getting to be an expert with your camera and lenses now. This looks just wonderful. I love the colour tones and the pretty framing of the shot. Perfect DOf and good focus

Hi Horia,
As you already mentioned yourself, an even smaller aperture would have been better. I think Paul gave you some solid advise on it. Besides that you did manage to create a wonderful photo. The composition is perfect the addition of the flower did add a wonderful splash of color and the soft colored and textured BG allows full focus on the subject. Both clarity and lighting are superb.
TFS,
Niek

Hello Horia,

Thank you for your recent critique of my autumn Teton photo. I haven't time to catch up on all your postings I missed while away but this one did catch my eye. I like the diagonal subject placement. The natural colors and out of focus background are lovely. It's a nice sharp presentation.

Hallo Horia
I came across this beautiful Sooty Copper whilst browsing through your gallery. A most enjoyable sight. This is a well composed, sharp shot of the Sooty Copper. Nice contrast with the pink and maroon flower. I am really charmed by this butterfly picture. I like the white hairy outline which creates such a nice distinction with the brown colour of the wings. The striped antennas are an eye-catcher. A lovely photo from your lens. Thanks for sharing image and interesting notes.
Kind regards
Anna
